Morning OB,
Anyone use a ZTR mower to keep up their plots during the summer. I don't own a tractor, and it's a pain every year to get one up to the lease and cut the 6-foot jungle that takes over my plots by September. Was debating bringing my mower up once a month and just keep it cut.

Easiest thing to do is get you a 4wheeler sprayer and hit it with roundup. And you are done

Think about it, it’s grass you are cutting, what is a lawn mower used for?

As long as you don’t let it get 6’ tall yes you can use a lawn mower to cut it. Of course watch out for the obvious like stumps, rocks branches etc.

I’ve used anything from a weedeater, regular riding mower to skid steers and tractors to mow mine down.

Second the sprayer but I use clethodim. Not a huge difference in cost and it targets grass specifically, so it will kill the less desirable stuff that gets 4 ft tall like Johnsongrass and ryegrass, but let clovers and native forbs live. Basically a poor man’s summer planting.

Do you want more turkeys?
I personally would not mow plots, they are great for turkey poults and even fawns to hide in.

Ideally you crimp them down and burn

What’s the benefit of crimping if you aren’t going to top seed a summer blend?

If ya'll would top dress with clover in the fall, it would be 3 to 5 inches high now with both deer and turkeys feeding in it.. Just an idea, not for everybody.
