took the kids out today and had a blast.
i need some help diagnosing a problem:

runs great when moving, but it will not idle. It will start up no problem, but may take multiple tries playing around with the choke to get it to idle long enough to get into gear and go.

2005 Yamaha 115 Outboard 2stroke.

New plugs, maybe see if the fuel line or bulb needs to be replaced, have it serviced or learn the service requirements and do it yourself, clean the carbs. If it still won't idle, have it looked at by a professional.

Chances are the boat has been sitting up, that's why the guy got rid of it. Have it serviced as far as filters go. Run some ring free and sea foam through it

Had one. That motor is picky as hell. No real advice other than make sure it's not mixing too rich.

I'd start with 4LSU2.

How do you go about checking this?
I'm somewhat mechanically inclined... I figured I would start with fuel filter and maybe spark plugs

How hard is it to clean carbs?

If it's running good at WOT, then I wouldn't do a carb clean first. But those carbs need to to be synchronized on occasion. Take the breather off the carbs, loosen the idle set screw till it's not touching. Check to see that the butterflies are both completely closed. If they're not, two of the cylinders will lean out causing it to "sneeze" and die. Loosen the screws
On the linkage to allow the butterflies to close. Relighted and set idle to about 600 rpm.

You may not be able to do this because it does not idle, but it's worth a shot to tell you.
Google "Shock Treatment with Yamalube Ring Free"
Basically you'll need to know exactly how much gas is in your built in tank and mix accordingly, or do what I did and use a two gallon external can.

My procedure for oil injected 2 stroke engines:

• You’ll use 2 oz of Ring Free per gallon of gas. Some will tell you to use seafoam, etc, but to me Ring Free cleans better (30% is proprietary ingredients)

• To use a remote tank you’ll need to also buy a secondary primer bulb and hose.

• Take the engine cover off and follow your incoming fuel line and find the hose splice before the fuel filter. Tap into the fuel line there with the new hose and primer bulb, should be exact matches in size.

• Mix 2 gallons of gas with 4 oz of ring free and place the tapped in fuel line into the satellite tank and prime the “new” fuel bulb/hose to the engine.

• Start the engine on the garden hose in your yard and let it burn ½ to 1 gallon of the Ring Free mixture.

• Shut off the engine and let it sit for a few hours.

• Run it again and burn another ½ to 1 gallon of the mixture again.

• Let it site for a few hours.

• Disconnect the tapped in hose, reconnect to your original fuel line, prime it back again and run for 15 minutes or until you are sure you you’ve run all the ring free mixture out.

You will have to put oil in Ring Free mixture if your 2 stroke is not oil injected!

This should clean your entire engine fuel system and can be done when you are sure there is not another fuel issue upstream of your outboard. I.E. water in your fuel tank, etc…

Then change your plugs and fuel filter.

Also after the shock treatment run ring free as an additive every fill up

My bet would be something with the carb.

Here's my 2 cents. Unless you're going to be running it daily, you should really put ethanol-free gas in it with sta-bil. The only place i know to get true ethanol-free is at the new racetrac in chalmette. A lot of the indian-owned gas stations claim to have ethanol-free, but it's complete BS.

Good luck!

Also - if anyone reading this does the same treatment on a 4 stroke, be sure to change your oil and filter right after. All the "junk" it cleans out can end up in the oil, potentially causing other issues.
