What modifications are a must have?

IMO, a john boat should be a 14' bateau with a 25HP tiller motor on the back.
Anything beyond that is an aluminum fishing rig - live wells, trolling motor, fish finder, etc.
John boats have gone the same direction as full size pickups. What happened to a small boat under $4,000?

Effing Public Safety is seeking your help in identifying a man that launched a 14-ft Jon boat with a 200 HP Mercury this morning into the Little Effing River.
If you can identity this man, please notify Effing Public Safety immediately.
Some of the officers really, really, really want a ride.
Thank you for your support.

I made a deck out of 3/4 treated plywood and covered it with outdoor carpet to cast off of.
Moved the gas tank under the deck in the front to better distribute weight.
Added a cheapo fish finder with a transom mount bracket to hold the transducer.
Cup holders for cold beer might've been the biggest improvement. Can't tell you how many beers lost their lives in the bottom of my 12' boat before I finally screwed a couple cupholders to the transom.
Ended up with a 25hp mercury on the back so had to add 1/2" aluminum plate along the inner and outer transom. Kind of scary seeing the transom flex every time I hit the gas.
A transom saver was a must have for trailering with an engine that weighed almost as much as the boat.
A trolling motor was nice.
After a while I got sick of stepping on everything and dealing with cords, cables and dead battery so I stripped it back to just a hull with a deck and an engine.
It was always fun to work on but a bateau ain't a bass boat and don't need all the bells and whistles of the glitter boats.

He’s wearing a helmet.
What’s the issue?

Never understood the term Jon boats. Where does this come from. We call them aluminum hulls.

A trolling motor for when you break down.
And a five gallon bucket. For everything else.

quote:
They originated in Scandinavia where "Jon" (pronounced Yawn) is a common name. Fisherman used them to haul gear and fisherman to their larger fishing vessels. Every fisherman there found them to be very useful so they took on the most common name "Jon." They were cheap to construct and every "Jon" could afford one of his own.
Additionally, some early settlers in the Ozarks, where the boats gained popularity, were Scandinavian, and "Jon" was a common name in that region, making it plausible that the name simply stuck.

I don’t have any pictures of my Jon boat. But it’s a 14 footer with an old 6 hp Johnson outboard on the back. Boat and motor have a hand painted camo pattern The front end is all bashed in and the bottom is a patchwork quilt of leak repairs at each rivet. I always have a bailer. I call it the War Buzzard.

That's a working boat. Got no time for any damn cleaning, except for the fish caught.
You've got some serious "Redneck shite" going on there......
but it obviously works from the specks in the bottom of the boat.

Maybe...or because the one my dad had when I was a kid had a Johnson 15hp on it...

I have a 1436 Ouachita from 1974 from my grandfather. I don't take it out much because I have a 1230 Alumacraft for the pond. But when I do take it out, it's powered by a 2.5HP Suzuki 4stroke and pushes me 8mph with just me in the boat. If I added another human it would probably bog down to 4mph. But it starts on the first pull every time. Prior to the death of my Sears Gamefisher 7.5, I caught many fish, buzzes, and sunburns inshore around Charleston when I lived there. I could win a billion dollars in the lottery and I'd still have a jonboat. Sure I'd have a sportfisher and a houseboat too, but I'd still have the jonboat.

Alweld 1444. Bought it as just the bare hull and built out the gun box, installed the sea deck, and coated the bottom with Gator Glide. Started out with a Copperhead 13hp surface drive which I had on my previous hull, but didn’t have enough speed to cover distance. Switched to a Yamaha 25. Mostly use it for hunting, it hasn’t caught enough fish.
