John Deere zero tun not starting

I have a Home Depot John Deere zero turn. Left it outside like a knucklehead for about a month. Drained the carb, replaced fuel, checked spark. All seemed ok.
Will turn over but not start. If I soak a little fuel on a rag and put it near the air intake, it cranks right up and runs like a top without the rag until I turn it off. Next time I go to start it, same thing.
Any ideas?

Sounds like its not getting any fuel to me.

That’s what I thought but I literally let it run for 3 hours after I started it the first time. Today I drove it to storage over a mile away. No problems.

carb is clogged or a hole in a line most likely

That the briggs engine made for Deere.
If I am correct you are saying it is hard to cold start or use the choke.
That means putting more fuel than air in the beginning after it sits up for a time period.
Then once it starts and been running awhile it is ok and starts right up.
fuel not getting to the carb fast enough on initial start or choke.
If you are sitting it for x amount of time that could be the culprit also.
Could be air leak line or pump even carb having issues.

Thanks for the responses. Yes if it sits a while it won’t start. I pour a little gas on a rag and put it near the intake and then it runs great even without the gas rag. I guess I need to do a thorough check. First thing I’ll do is clean the carb with some wire. I didn’t realize it could have a carb problem and still run normally after I get it started.
ETA: Come to think of it, it’s always had this problem but would eventually start after cranking for 15 or 20 seconds. Maybe it is a suction problem.

Fuel pump is a vacuum style that has lost prime.
That's why it will run with a little gas or ether.
New Briggs fuel pump is maybe 16 bucks or so.
Change the fuel lines at the same time.

What Rando said plus the “impulse” line from the pump to the valve cover.

Rather than the gas rag trick, wouldn't starting fluid be easier? I have one, probably 20 years old, that i have to use starting fluid on errytime I crank it (it sits for months at a time).

Sounds more like an air issue than a fuel issue...imho

Call it a zero start instead of a zero turn.
