Jet sinking pilings. Who's done it?

Going redo the pier and some other stuff at the marsh camp this weekend. Have to sink some 4x4s and some 2x8s.

We've done some research but none if us have actually done it. We plan on using large PVC as sleeves, shooting down with a long extension pressure washer and pumping out the mud.

What should be concerned about? Anyone done this with any problems?

At your camp you don't need it, you should just be able to shove them down. You can always use a Mankiller too.

Will I be able to get them down far enough? Don't have a driver to fit a 2x8

We did it about 5 years ago to drive some 4x4s for the dock. Got some 2" pvc with a 1" reducer on the end. rented a 2" pump and let her eat. It worked pretty well. you still have to hit the boards a little bit , but it makes it a hole lot easier.

I worked at a marina for a cpl of springs and we did this w/ a trash pump and a 2” or so pipe to spud 4x4’s and posts in. It works great and took 5 min to spud in a piling, if its not straight just put the pipe down again, loosen the post and giddy up. When we started I went wow this is going to be tuff – nope – getting the post to the water was the hardest thing – sinking it was easy. I have never tried it w/ a pressure washer but if that doesn’t work – go rent a trash pump or rent one from a marina I guarantee they have a setup. BTW you will be soaked after the process but its so easy you don’t mind

If you have a good setup they should go down nice and easy. I've done it with 30ft pilans so you shouldn't have a problem.

We use a mudhog.
Put hose beside piling and sink it

Wait, why are you sinking a 2x8 in the mud?

Make a cap for the 2x8s out of 2x4s. You just need something that won't pop off the top.

I don't know. I'm not the foreman here! Just going off what I'm told by my camp partner.

Ive done it with telephone poles but it was in Navarre, FL on a sandy surface in 4 foot water. Very simple and cool procedure. Hurricane Ivan tore them up about a year later.

I helped a follow worker put dock post in using a portable (6 HP) water pump.... the pump hose was connected to a length of 6" PVC pipe with a tee .... place the tee so it is sideways ... connect the pump to the side part of the tee... the top of the tee had a screw on cap .... wash the hole down as deep as you need it .... unscrew the cap ....slide 4x4 down in side the PVC .... pull the PVC up leaving the post in the hole .... by doing this mud does not fall back into your washed hole until you pull the PVC ... we used a 12'/14' Alum boat to hold the pump ....

Not sure if a pressure washer is gonna give you enough flow. We use a 2" cheap pump from harbor freight and fire hose with 2" pipe and reduction as described. Jet hole really deep (like 10ft for a 20 ft piling), find the hole with a 2x6 and use that as a guide to slide the piling into the hole like a shoe horn. All while you're doing this jet around it, and at some point it will just start to sink really fast. Might need someone to jump on it it give it a little help.

Eta: definitely at least a 4 man job from our experience, and more is better

Pressure washer won't give you the volume of water needed. Get a small gas powered pump.

Why do I need volume if I've got plenty if pressure blowing out the hole?

You need volume of water to push the dirt out of the way. I haven't done it either but will need to for a wharf behind my house so I've done some research. There's several youtube videos of people doing it.

But I don't get why a pressure hose won't do the same.

I know down in the Cut Off/Golden Meadow area they rent the whole contraption at rental stores. The one we rented had about a 10 foot long metal pipe that was used to jet.
