Ha! You sound just like me from five years ago.

I didn't start deer hunting until my 30's. I'm so freakin addicted now....

I shot my first deer 5 years ago. Got three that year. Only one in the Hurricane Gustov year. Other than that, it has been great!!

22 down and counting!!

I tell you what. Work all the contacts you have. If you don't get onto something, I have a friend who does guided hunts. I would have to meet you first and then vouch for you with this guy. Or you and your son would have to go with my crew next season. But, it could be a possibility. I know you would get your first deer. I have a hard time letting someone struggle to get into deer hunting. We need all the advocates we can get!!!
Anyway, I brought two fellow Iraq war vets with me last season who both got their first deer on the same day. It was awesome!!!

Email me if you end up needing a hunt. I must tell you now that I will be very careful with who I bring to my buddy's place. Plus, you have to be willing to drink and play poker.

Thanks WT. I've hunted ducks squirrels and rabibits since a kid. It's archery that has me do driven to hunt deer. My son is deer obsessed and he is only 6! I'm a conscience hunter with safety on my mind. My son is my world. Didnt I buy that 45-70 from you??

Yep!

Keep in touch. I could possibly set something up for you.

I killed two with a crossbow two seasons ago and made my first bow kill this past season.

Let me know, I'll see what I can do.

SenseiBuddy good luck!

What you need a camp for... haha I have been sleeping in the cab of my truck when I stay overnight at my hunting grounds. Nothing but me and trees. It isn't too bad actually. I have pretty much been in the same boat as you. 1 hr 55 minutes drive.

No half day hunts thats for sure.

I dropped my hunting camp when I moved to FL. I deer and turkey hunted pretty hard in GA, but I dont have the time and its not worth the $$ here in FL.

A decent camp if you can find one runs $3,000-4,000 a year in Central FL. The deer are tiny and the seasons are short. Hogs are plentiful, but who wants to hunt a swamp at a 100 degree temps? The alternative is driving to AL or GA and sure you pay less for a membership but you offset much of that with gas for $4 a gallon. Venison is good and all, but by time one considers memberships, gasoline, processing, depreciation on your vehicles, and time that could have been spent making money... your paying USDA Prime beef money for deer meat. Sorry, I'll take the beef and pocket the money...

I decided to invest the monies I used to spend on leases toward making one or two great trips a year. This has worked great as opposed to wasting weekend after weekend chasing a big buck that didnt exist. I havent regretted it one bit.

I'd rather make one or two high quality hunts a year than dozens of low quality hunts just for the sake of going hunt.

Maybe I'm wrong here and if so, I apologize in advance but I liken that to showing up in Joplin today and being excited to be able to cut firewood.

Me and a friend hunt south of Shreveport. We spent the last two years turning a 1500 acre cattle ranch into some nice hunting property. Big deer and only a few of us hunt it. My wife is 4 months pregnant, which will put her due in November. Needless to say, I won't be hunting up there at all this year.

Luckily, I'm also in a hunting club that is about 20 minutes from my house and very cheap. But they don't have very big deer and the terrain is about as swampy as it gets. The camping is the best part out there.

To the OP, Craigslist usually has some cheap clubs. I found one a few miles away on there. But keep in mind that you get what you pay for!

I guess I didn't think that one through.

It's our first, so I'm excited. I'll be able to slip away a few times and make a few hunts though.
