Mathews phase 4

In my saddle on a ridge where I’ve been running a camera since last week. Went to work over the weekend and of course had a shooter buck chase a doe by my camera. I came in here late yesterday evening and ended up seeing 7-8 deer, including a little buck trailing a doe.
It’s a cold one for sure. Packed in my fuzzy moccasins and changed out of my boots at the tree.
Good luck. They should be moving good today.

Three does 150 yards east in the lane
Today’s gonna be lit. Buddy heater, that is.

Good luck boys. Every deer on the place moved yesterday. Should be more of the same today

You work your arse off scaling those trees and dealing with public land yahoos. You have earned another biggun.

Good luck guys and be safe.

Thanks man. To me, my time and effort paid off when I was able to put my brother on his buck last week. I called that shot perfectly, even told him what tree to be in. He killed at 4pm, and the buck was within 30 yards of him.
This is my favorite time to be in the woods. I love hunting with my rifle, but I love not dealing with the yahoos even more so lol

Yeah heard it was crowded in there last week. Also heard of a decent amount of bucks killed in there too.

It was the most people I’ve ever seen here. I saw a few bucks get pulled out but they were all small, with the exception of the 2 we pulled out. Had a guy at the campground skinning a little 4pt midday, then when I got back after the evening hunt, was told he killed an 8pt. People killing 2 bucks a day is part of the reason why it’s tough to kill good bucks on public land.

lol, you sound like a buddy of mine that says it’s over run with retards there for any gun season.

I’ve never been there nor know the terrain but will make a trip out that way next season being it’s only an hour from my place in MS. Areas I hunt in MS are getting over run with retards also.

i know a guy who hunts by people with deer dogs and they shoot everything. trust me on this, public land is better than where he hunts

you actually kill nice deer on public land and you see them. if you hunt at his place consider it a great hunt if you even see deer

Yeah it is. Being so big allows it to handle the gun season pressure pretty well. I only ran into 1 other hunter in the woods last week.

Ended up only seeing a spike this morning, so I came to an area I’ve never been to before and put in a few miles of scouting. Found some really good sign in a thick arse area. Climbed up into a small oak in my saddle. Max shot distance is about 25 yards. I’m not super confident since I’ve never hunted this area, but you never know.

I'm sitting on a food plot that I've been stubbornly hunting all season. I missed a doe here early in the season and have only seen two yearlings that are basically our pets by now in my hunts since. I'm hoping for a change tonight with the colder weather. 33 degrees with my 30-06.

I plan to come back here after deer season to mop up some squirrels. There are several hanging out around the field.

I had a pretty action filled hunt tonight. Deer started coming into the field within 15 minutes of me being in the stand. The wind was swirling pretty bad though. Every deer ended up getting spooked and leaving, but they kept coming from different directions. Ended up seeing 7 and landing a pretty 8 point (maybe 7) right at 5 pm. He was working a scrape. I thought for a moment he wasn't going to walk out. He stood on the edge of the field smelling the air. I can't tell if he ever did catch my scent, but ignored it to work the scrape or if I was just fortunate.

It has ended up being a fun season. Outside of taking kids hunting or hunting squirrels, I'm tapping out until next year.

Congrats on landing a pretty buck, Rick. They had to feed this evening. I climbed up with deer in the lane. Saw 7 before 3 pm.
