I keep 4 Daiwa BG's on the boat for newbies when we redfish and they are quite capable reels for the money. If you are looking for something a little nicer then it;s the Stadic all day.

For saltwater use, you ideally want a daiwa reel that has "mag seal". The least expensive options for that are the BG and the Fuego.

For shimano, the NaCl and the Miravel fill Those same voids.

That's exactly why I bought one; it was a 2500 combo for $140. I wanted good equipment but something I wouldn't mind handing to my sons' friends. I ended up personally using it far more than I expected.
