Hello everyone,
I'm not well versed on snake identification and was hoping someone here could let me know what type of snake this is that I saw in my yard today.
I live in Central Alabama at about 1200 ft.

Looks chicken or rat. Let it be

Thanks, Chandler and Camden. I didn't kill it. I saw the same kind as this one about a week ago and it may have been about 3 feet longer.
I have a lot of bird feeders with black oil seed around and birds are around constantly.
Do you think the birds may be attracting them?

Probably the critters that are eating what the birds drop.

We need to sticky a picture of a rat snake on top of the board. 90% of snake ID threads are rat snakes

Thanks. Now that you mentioned that, I have been seeing a lot of chipmunks lately.

A few years ago, I got a good one in the backyard. I wouldn't have killed it expect that I have children that play in the yard quite a bit.

My in laws live in Central Alabama and the FIL has an old bank bag full of rattles. They are abundant in that area.

We killed several of these on Lacon Mountain, that’s why I asked

No, it's in the mountains but in St. Clair county.

That's a lot of rattles. I've seen this one, in my yard, and a few more in the woods behind the house.

Grey Rat Snake. Great for rodent control but they do also enjoy a feathered meal when it presents itself. I had one I had to relocate off of the porch every night for a week. He would set up like this in the evening hoping he'd be in prime position for an early morning snack.

That's crazy. Who would ever imagine they would try to catch a hummingbird? You learn something new every day.

Had one hanging from our gutters in BR a few years ago. I was sitting a few feet away when he snatched this bird flying by

I was sitting outside listening to the radio when I heard the bird scream almost over my head.
My wife hates snakes so I knew I had to mentally prepare her for it when she walked outside. "ok baby, before you walk out here let me tell you something"
