I have never had to hunt hogs before, but after this deer season I am gonna do my best to take as many out as I can on my lease. Question is, what is the best rifle and scope combo for under 3K to hunt at night with?

3000 is a big budget for that set up.

You want to be quiet or do you want to hit hard?

Following. I'm in the same boat but just bought a PA-10 from PSA and trying to look at medium budget NV optics. I'm leaning towards the ATN x-sight II.

Can you have both?

I'm using a 300 Blackout with an ATN scope. At night I'll be shooting no more than 100 yards.

Night vision and Thermal are not cheap from my limited research. I am anticipating the scope being the biggest chunk of this budget. It would be really great to keep it under 2K, but I have zero knowledge on night vision and thermal. Anyone around the Baton Rouge area that would be a good resource to go talk to?

That's pretty much all I would need. No shot would be over 150 yards for sure.

You going to sit in a stand or go searching for them?

Probably some sort of ar10, a ir laser, and nvg.

But that would be over 3k easy.

Do you have an AR15? Can easily get an ir laser and nvg for close to 3k.

Everything in life has compromises.

Assuming .308 is the ceiling for "hitting hard" - you can't do that and be quiet. Folks will tell you that 5.56 and .300BLK (which can be suppressed relatively easily) don't hit hard enough for hogs - if you're going to be facing them in the dark at close range.

6.8 is probably the compromise. Suppressable, with about 80% of the hitting power of .308. I'd build my own, if it was me. I'm not up on the current NV/thermal sights, but with a $3k total budget, the Armasight Predator 336 2-8x25 - comes in slightly under $2k - and you can easily spend twice that on night vision, but with your budget, I'd try to get the rifle at about $1k (which pretty much takes .308 out of the mix) and get that Armasight, because that's a really good value.

Now, if you don't want thermal, you can really open up your rifle budget by going with something like ATN's X-Sight II Smart Day & Night line, in various mags for under $600.

Or, maybe squeeze another $400 to $600 into the budget and get a factory built 6.8, plus a decent thermal sight at the $2k range - that leaves you some room to upgrade the furniture, trigger and, maybe a suppressor.

Why Quiet? Is that just money spent that is not needed?

I'm currently having a trust set-up and looking into suppressing my ar10. I've never shot a suppressed 308, however. Worth the cost/time?

I have never hunted hogs, or any other animal at night before. I didn't know which was better. Quiet or knock down power. I think I am gonna get the ATN X-Site II. It seems like a decent starter scope for me to do what I need to do. Just have to decide on the rifle now.

I'm not sure I would fiddle with it in the modern era. If you're going to shoot .308 - wear hearing protection and be ready when the neighbors call the police.

If you want to suppress, go with .300BLK or 6.8 - there is way too much user base/experience with those as viable solutions to fiddle around with suppressing .308, although I will defer to those with more experience/success with that combination.

Get a Savage or Marlin .17 and put a decent Nikon 3-9x40 scope on it. That's a sub $400 setup and will be a hog killin' machine.

Depends on your definition. I have an AR-10 in 6.5cm and it's suppressed. Same suppressor fits on my Ruger American Predator in .308, ar-15 in .300blk, and ar-15 in 6.8.

On in the .300blk with subs is it quiet. Still have the action that you hear but not much else.

On ever think super sonic it is not quiet. There is no boom but there is a pretty loud crack of the bullet.

Of those guns that I listed, I've never shot them without a suppressor. I just prefer it plus I have it so why not.

Hunt with them suppressed as well.

ETA: I built my 6.8 was easily under 1k. I didn't go cheap on anything and probably have around $700 in it not including glass.

AR-10 is a different ballgame. Unless you build it off a PSA upper and lower it will be $1500ish.

I hope Bleeding Purple comes in with his sage wisdom on this topic - in most cases where you have an infestation bad enough for you to say something like this, it's too late to "hunt" them. You can, for meat, for sport and just for the positive vibe you'll get from killing them in this fashion - but you won't really control the population. You'll have to do a comprehensive abatement program, primarily oriented around trapping. It will require checking the traps regularly - and you have to kill every single one of them, including (especially?) the cute little shoats and piglets.

Mercy is not your friend when eradicating hogs. If you leave 10% of them, for example, the population will rebound in just 2 or 3 years.

They're that fecund and adaptable. And the ones you don't kill will breed smarter, harder to kill hogs for the next generation.
