Idaho fish and game to evaluate what is “fair chase”

Idaho looking to assess fair technology in big game hunting
Ran across this on long range hunter forum. Will be interesting to see how it plays out and what states follow suit. I can see rules that come out that limit technology and equipment restrictions end up causing more animals to be wounded and lost.
Such as, no cartridges faster than 2000fps and no lazer range finder and turret that dials and people will just lob a 50cal with open sights like quigly down under.

I’ll be interested to hear their determination. The same ballistics technology that makes a guy feel ethical at 1100 yards also makes 450 yards a very high percentage shot. They can take away the tech but it likely won’t stop folks from lobbing arrows and bullets beyond a range they are competent to do so.

I understand not allowing the use of drone to scout and some of the other items that are true technology advantages, but some of these changes would move us in the wrong direction.

Was expecting this to be about forward facing sonar.

I doubt its anything related to restricting ammo cartridges or range finders. All that would result in is more animals getting wounded, never tagged or recovered, and end up dying a slow painful death later anyway.
Probably more to do with restricting use of trail cams and electronic communication between hunting party members while out in the field on a hunt.

electronic communication
Highly doubtful in Idaho. I’ve never been, but I’d bet cell service is terrible in those mountains, and GPS communication is the most reliable source. That seems really unsafe to try to limit the communication between hunters.

I’d join a committee to do away with it in Louisiana. There would be a lot less big fish caught in Bussey Brake, that’s for sure.

Nationwide, fish and wildlife agencies are wrestling with balancing technology, hunter success, and wildlife management objectives, and Idaho is no different. As technology advances and hunter success rates increase, agencies are left with only a few tools to ensure that hunters are not overharvesting game species and jeopardizing their long-term sustainability. Those tools include: Equipment restrictions Season timing and length Number of tags Fish and Game has traditionally managed game species with a focus on providing greater hunter opportunity, including a higher number of available tags and longer seasons
They are not looking at ethics they are looking at reducing success and the amount taken.

That’s pretty easy to do with draw-only access and short seasons. Seems like this is more targeted towards cell cams and drones that are taking a lot of the leg work out of locating animals in vast areas. I know cell cams are especially controversial out west when folks just leave them on public land running on solar for years.

I don’t think it’s about ethical kills as much as fair chase. Some of these long range rifle guys the past 10 years are are using ridiculous set ups that are on a tripod on one ridge shooting 1000 yards to 2 ridges over past one elk herd and the 2nd doesn’t give 2 shits the hunters are even there they are so far away.
I know many wouldn’t agree with me but limited rifle set ups to where shots beyond something like 500 yards would be fine with me. 9x scopes, limited range finders, etc.
The problem is otherwise guys keep pushing the limits and next thing you know they are shooting 2000 yards with a 50 cal

That seems really unsafe to try to limit the communication between hunters.

With FFS you at the very least have to make them bite
But there is absolutely nothing fair chase about sitting at the camp or house drinking beer and getting a text from your camera and going out there and shooting that deer or turkey while you watch it in real time And it happens everyday during the season
