Just a little gas and let it run dry. Many a small engine has met its demise by sitting with gas in it. The gas can slowly leach through the carb and into the engine oil. I don't trust shut off valves. No gas in the tank during storage and there is no chance of gas getting in the oil

Figured I would bump this thread. Lost power at noon yesterday.
Fired up my 5500 workhorse this morning at 5am.

Decided at daylight I should try the one still in the box. Got it out, put oil in it and gas and it fired up on the second pull.
Plugged one freezer into it, and monitoring it, but seems to be running so far.

No idea when we might get power back. No update but KU, and haven't seen one truck at all in our area.

Leave it in box. No need to run it and start maintenance issues.

Best thing to do is drain all the gas from the tank bone dry. Run it till it sputters then drain the carb. Pull the spark plug and pull the starter rope a few times till no gas is coming out.
Add a few teaspoons of marvel mystery oil to the spark plug hole and put spark plug back in.
It will crank up on 2nd or third attempt in five years if you follow that process.

Yeah, I'm going to drain it tomorrow.

Whats the usual suspect on onans? I didn't get to my toy hauler on the coast this summer. Pulled it for the storm and the onan doesn't want to work. Pulled the carb, haven't gotten into it yet. Anything else I should be checking, particularly on those?

its a good idea to. the mistake i learned is you need to power up something off the generator, not strictly let the generator run for a while.

Really? I never knew this, what’s the reasoning? I usually just put some gas in it then let it run out and I try to do that twice a year.

You want to run the whole unit, not just the engine. This allows the genset to get a little exercise too.
