man, that is a damn nice story....enjoy your grandpa while you have him....

as for the shotgun, I also have a sportsman 58 that was my dad's gun before he passed....it is one of the sweetest shooting shotguns that I have ever had...I wouldn't hesitate to use your gun for dove or squirrel hunting....take some pics and show your grandfather what you killed, as this will make him very happy...

as someone else said, I would not shoot steel shot in a model 58 as it builds a lot higher pressure and may damage the gun...older shotguns weren't designed for that and it could ruin the choke at best and blow up the barrel at worst...lead shot is fine, though...

My dad has an old old 16 from his dad that he was told to not even shoot with modem shells, because the modern powder causes more pressure and the barrel that old wasn made to handle it and it could end up failing

don't need to be old shells...just stay away from the "magnum" loads, etc...particularly if it is a 3" gun....

I'm not saying yours is the same, you just may want to ask somebody who knows a little about all that before you start putting boxes through it, just in case. Or at least do some googling about it

Correct, 2 3/4 7/8oz shot will be fine most likely. Do some research or ask a professional if it's safe to blast some doves

Man these are the things in life to cherish. I miss my grandpa so much. He wasnt much of a hunter, only one gun.. An old 22lr my dad has. He was more of a fisherman, some of my best memories are with him fishing. You couldn have asked for a better graduation gift! Lock that up somewhere and pass it along one day!

First time I shot a 16 gauge I was about 10 years old and it literally knocked me on my arse. My great Uncle was there and thought it was quite funny. Had a bruise on my shoulder for a few days.

There is a limited number of shotshells made in the 16, which means they probably handed you a magnum load and you probably shot it through a light weight gun. Good way to het a good laugh from an unsuspecting kid...

One reason I'd pawn it and buy a gun I'd use. I know I'm the oddball about these things. Just don't care to keep things that clutter.

Damn man. Having that handed down it would have more value to me hanging on the wall never used than selling it.

Hunt with it with your grandpa and your dad. take lots of photos. Make sure to also get an old photo of him hunting with the gun if possible.

keep the best photos in your safe with the gun and pass it all on to your son.
