Anyone have any experience hunting these properties across Kansas? Likely going to head up late turkey season and might stop at a few along the way.

We hunt them for quail and pheasant in the western part of the state. The online maps will tell you what animals you might find on the WIHA. On the west side of the state, if the WIHA isn't near a river bed with trees you won't find turkeys.

Pretty spot on, also you can only hunt certain animals on the WIHA's. You can look on the map or the hunting digest book they typically have at Wal-Marks will tell you what species you can hunt on that certain property. Some may be upland only and others everything else.

I'm not sure this is correct. I hunt WIHA almost every weekend all across KS and I don't recall ever seeing something specified for a certain type of game other than WIHA parcels that are leased solely for spring turkey hunting. Some pieces may be shotgun/archery hunting only, that's the only other stipulation I know of.

If you are talking about what KDPWT specifies as "Likely Species" on the online hunting atlas, they aren't saying that you can only hunt the species listed as likely. If you were restricted to just the "likely species," that would be a whole ton of acreage that would really have limited use.

To the OP, there is opportunity on WIHA for spring turkeys. Like all public hunting, be prepared to have some competition. Depending on where you go, you'll probably see quite a few non-residents in town, but that doesn't mean you'll encounter anybody in the field. The eastern half of the state has a higher turkey density than the western part. I see good numbers of turkeys in western KS while bird hunting, but I haven't hunted them out there. Like Wick said, you'll need to concentrate in on riparian areas that have some mature timber. Start by looking at the annual brood surveys and that should help you pick a few counties to research. I would use OnX and the online hunting atlas to study WIHA and go from there.

It might be what you suggested or it might be in Nebraska I am thinking. I would have to look at the book again.

Thanks for all the replies. Having to go to Oklahoma City to visit family—so going to try to make a week and half trip out of Oklahoma and Kansas trying to hunt along the way.

My experience with WIHA is that is mostly a bunch of BS!! A lot of plowed fields with absolutely no cover!!
