My good friend bought a very high end gun from gun werks. The rifle is supposed to be dead on at 500 yards out of the box. He went out on an open range low fence white tail hunt in West Texas two weeks ago. He says the guide spotted a 170 class deer at 685 yards. Ultimately he took the shot. They found a blood trail but never found the deer. Says the blood trail went for 75 yards(scattered) and stopped. My question is when does a shot become unethical event when you are backed by a highly technical scope. There has to be some sort of midle ground.

If he’d never shot the gun at that range he should never try and take an animal at that range

I can pretty much guarantee gunwerks doesnt zero any rifle at 500.

It may be a 1/2 moa guarantee at 500, but that doesnt mean it would be zeroed at 500.

And your friend is in the wrong for not verifying his equipment. Unless he picked it up from them it was probably on a ups truck. The nightforce scopes they use are tough, but I wouldnt trust anything after travel. Always verify zero after travel.

ETA: Long range hunting is much more than buying a $12k system. Their system is legit, but you must still know how to use it and understand whats going on.

When you are not practiced at that range and your round does not contain the amount of FT/LBS of energy for a kill shot.

685 yards is beyond the limitations of 99% of hunters and 100% of firearms "out of the box", you are at the point where the slightest miscalculation on range makes a huge difference in impact location.

I have spent most of my life hunting open bean fields and take some pretty long shots but most likely would pass on that one, on the other hand I have a good friend who practices at 1,000 yards regularly with a very custom rifle who I would have no issues taking the shot.

All that to say know your personal limitations and act accordingly.

I honestly don’t know a lot about the company but apparently the scope does all of the calculations for you and you purchase the correct ammo from them to be spot on. Anyone who is more knowledgeable feel free to correct me.

Well gunwerks has shots on elk at 860 yards on their YouTube page so...... these aren’t the guns that you obviously buy at your local wall mart. These are very highly engineered machines that cost nothing less that 7k. Please be informed before you post a comment like that.

Just my opinion as I have never elk hunted or shot at a deer beyond 300 yds would think shooting elk at long ranges is typical in the environment of mountains and such especially when you have almost a 2’x2’ kill area on a 800-1000 lbs COW to kill it. Shooting a 170” deer with a limited area to make a clean kill(pie plate) at 685 yds is a bit much.

Thoughts?

He should be ecstatic that he drew blood at that distance, so doubt it was the rifle.

It aint the gun that is the issue, anyone that thinks he can make that shot without lots of practice is an asswipe.

I have friends that are pretty decent competitive long range shooters. None of them would take a gun they haven't practiced with extensively and attempt that shot.

Your friend is a dumbass.

Agree. I have a friend just north of Natchez that can take ethical shots at 600 yards with no problem. 200 is about my limit.
