Well they’re back and after an unusually wet winter my backyard is loaded with them.

What products have y’all used successfully to kill the larvae in your lawn? I’m fed up with these guys hovering around all my doors and ultimately getting in the house.

I didn’t know what those were so I did a search. Always thought they were giant skeeters so I learned something today.

This is a crane fly:

This is a "skeeter hawk":

Crane flies DO NOT eat mosquitoes. "Skeeter hawks" or dragonflies do!

I don't know if "skeeter hawks" actually eat mosquitoes or not. But when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's there was a gazillion of them every spring in SWLA. Some of them were a good 4" long. The sky was literally full of them. I don't think those numbers exist anymore. So even if they do eat mosquitoes, I don't think their present day population can make much of an impact.

According to Smithsonian, which is a pretty reputable source, they do eat them. Furthermore, they can eat from 30 upwards to hundreds of mosquitoes per day.
