re: How To Handle Dogs While Hunting

Back in the day before folks baited, I was always happy to see dogs. They helped move the deer around. These days though with most deer being killed with their heads down feeding on corn, I guess it could become irritating.

I had 4 dogs from a trailer that bordered our property.
When we first hunted the property there were deer everywhere. You would see 15 + in each food plot. FF to 4 years ago these dogs show up. They ran deer all day and night. We started seeing 2-4 deer on each field and SPOOKY as hell when they would come out.
These dogs have been removed for the last year and a half. Our sightings have increased dramatically
Some say dogs won’t hurt. I think it’s might have to do with the frequency and the drive of the dog to actually run a deer and how often/how far. Some strike fear in the deer and some the deer pay no attention to.
The ones we had would not stop. It wasn’t a quick game to them. It was a lifestyle.
Glad they are gone!
BTW, they moved so I didnt have to do anythng drastic.

I saw a coyote caught in a conibear that was in a bucket with deer scraps in it. Surprised he stuck his head in that bucket but he did.

Do you have trouble reading?

I know a guy that had some beagles(only rabbit dogs of course) and they kept swimming a creek and running deer and a guy caught them and the owner came to get them. A week later it happened again and the guy called him up and only gave him the collars. After a few minutes he told him the dogs were in a pen and the guy took them home.
They never crossed that creek again. I don’t know if he just never hunted them around there again or if he convinced them to not cross a creek, but they were never a problem again.

An owner would let his pet get killed because he/she refused to control it? WTF is wrong with that owner?

A dog thief and a horse thief are two peas in the same pod. You know what happened to horse thieves, right?
And btw, he clearly said he did not want to shoot them.
Pet owners need to control their pets or not have them.

Some years ago there was a guy up the road with a pack of mixed beagle dogs that were constantly running deer and coyotes all over my and my neighbors property.I was mad enough to shoot them(I hate to shoot a dog) but I never got a chance,
All of a sudden they disappeared.Asked the neighbor about them,he said he wired Conibear beaver traps to trees knee high with scraps of meat for bait.Eliminated the whole pack.
I wasn’t sad about it.

Years ago, my paw paw loaded 12 gauge with rock salt. 1 shot and the dogs never came back. The salt gets in and under the skin and they never want to come to that area ever again
