We have a pretty good compost pile brewing right now. Tilled it up this morning and noticed plenty of ants in it. I want to avoid any pesticide to get rid of them, what are my options?

Orthene.

I know you said no pesticide but not sure if you meant NONE as in wanting to keep it organic, or none as in not safe for a garden.

Otherwise, I don't know.

That will destroy nutrients.

Dynamite, won't really kill all the ants but should scatter them to other areas of the yard.

Put some Talstar around the pile, like make a circle around it. Ants will be gone in a week.

I've heard of using grits and boiling water. Will try that first, then boiling water. Will wait on the dynamite....for now.

This.

Vinegar and water mixture.

As said above, boiling water will run them off.

Boric acid also works.

If nothing else, try salt. Not sure it will, or, won't work. But salt is the cure for so many other things it might run the ants off too.

try salt.

Salt would be worse for a garden than insecticides.

Add some extra fertilizer. Nitrogen will help with the organic breakdown anyway.

Salt??? WTF are you nuts? It's a compost pile, why would you want to introduce salt to your garden and flower beds?

Well if any of these work, wouldn't that make them "pesticides"?

I'm just saying. Salt cures everything else. Might cure this problem too.

Salt even might help you catch a few fish and grow a few inches.

boric acid. that will run off every pest in that area. i took 3 days for it to clear out an ant/cricket infestation a couple of years ago.
