Cant speak to the specific area but Pogeys, Pogeys and when in doubt use a Pogey....

Look for slicks … diving birds … and if the tarpon are there, you will see them
Rolling… the big schools are hard to hook up on… when the singles are rolling, to me, their easier to catch

We have a lot of electronics as well… have live scope on the boat - so we follow them around casting and trolling

In my expereience rolling Tarpon are frustratingly difficult to feed a bait to. Probably more to do with seeing them and knowing they are there but I can honestly say I have caught (hooked) very few rolling tarpon...I have caught loads of Tarpon that weren't rolling...

Yeah if we are going to get Pogey Boats in check they need to be harping on the damage it does to Tarpon IN ADDITION to the red fish. Everyone is screaming about the redfish but I've come accross more than a few pics of dead tarpon after they net an area for pogey.

I had forgotten that this is a bigger issue on the gulf coast than it is on the Atlantic. Off Georgia this time of the year catching Tarpon is merely a matter of making bait (pogeys), anchoring at the mouth of St Simons Sound on an outgoing tide, flat lining pogeys on 2 rods and fishing a finder rig on bottom with 2 more pogeys and hanging on. At times it is possible off a pontoon boat. Will get jumped off about 10-1 over hooked fish and the sharks and big rays can be a nuisance but it is pretty easy and at times fast and furious. Pogeys are geting harder and harder to find on the east coast also...it is damaging the sport fishing I beleive.

Boring is an understatement.. most days you won’t catch anything beside spinning sharks and Jack fish…. Both of which will wear your arse down getting in.. he was correct. Trolling around at 1 knot … during the meat of summer …. All damn day…. Nowhere to hide from the sun

It’s brutal …. But when you do catch one. It’s exciting … especially if your fishing a rodeo

Curious. What hook do ya’ll use. I bet a circle hook fished properly would bring y’all 8-10 to the boat.

5/0-6/0 snailed circle hooks. They are far better than J hooks in my experience but some folks swear by J hooks. I fish with rods in rods holders and a tarpon will pick up a bait and run off with it...just lift the rod out of the holder and tighten the line...IF...and its a big IF...they actually get hooked they hook themselves, most of the ones that are actually leadered or even landed are hooked while the rod is still in the rod holder. Most manage to jump off and many of those will do so within seconds of hitting or lifting the rod out of the holder. Almost all that are brought to the boat are hooked in a small area on either side of the corner of the mouth or a spot about the size of a half dollar in the back of the throat....they are VERY hard to get a hook in their mouth and they are very adapt at getting a hook out of their mouth...

Go up in size.

We run 16/0 to 20 depending on brands. You got a big jaw to get around.

You are an exquisitely odd man, yet I would gladly buy you drink (if you weren't a tea-totaler, that is). For no other reason to find out you are a real person, and see if you looked like Ignatius Reilly

My father in law's dad has a couple first place tarpons in the tarpon rodeo from the early 50's. Pretty cool photos.
They also got some old videos from the late 50s of them skiing in lake fields. Them baws went to the camp in slacks and button downs back then. Was just how they dressed.
