We used to catch them on hot dog pieces. Throw out next to em under a cork and reel em in and shoot em when they bite. Would catch some big ones all the time.

Snappers don't seem to climb up on things out of the water to bask like sliders, cooters, painteds or chicken turtles do very often. I'm sure it happens on occasion, but a basking trap floating in the water is there to catch emydids for the most part.
