How to be a better rat trapper......

About a month ago I started noticing a couple rat holes in my backyard, so I went to the pest control store and bought one of those little black boxes that you put poison in. In the time it's been out, I haven't noticed the slightest bit of poison inside the trap being eaten. Am I doing something wrong?
Last night I saw one run right past as I was setting the trap, so I know they are out there.

In a couple of weeks when they start selling fireworks get some smoke bombs. Light them up and throw them down the holes. This will 1) identify new openings that you did not know existed 2) kill rats in the hole or run them out. Most will be weak when they come out, club or shoot...

Remove the muffler from a puch-mower.
Run a large diameter hose from the exhaust. (_______-rig it appropriately so hose doesn't melt)
Shove other end into hole.
Run mower for 15 minutes.
This was my dad's secret weapon for gophers. Worked better than anything on the face of the earth.

worked in the mekong delta....from what I am told....
had a bunch living under the slab under my shed when we lived in metairie.... didn't realize we they were there or how many till put light on bird feeder one night then the war was on..
old benjamin pump was not fast enough.. so.. round new years.. switched to 22 w cb caps..
but.. until the source of the rats was eliminited the kept on coming..... finally started piling the carcasses near the source.. they got the picture... we nearly came to blows.... over it.. but they figured 3-1 wasn't fair.. could never round up another 2 to take their side for 5-1.
lil choupique was not around yet...

I've got a horrible gopher problem. The dog takes out a few every now and then, but their network of tunnels across my yard is more impressive than the vietcongs. I'm at a loss on how to get rid of them. I'm not exactly worried about my yard though. One of the perks of living in the country.

I have a similar problem, neighbors feed birds, rats are everywhere. I dont want to use poison because one crawled into my attic and died and it took days to find it. Tried traps with peanut butter but they wont touch it

I've been in this house for almost 5 years, and the neighbor has always put out bird seed. I was at her house once and as I was speaking with her I was looking over her shoulder and could see rats scurrying in and out of a broken piece of her carport slab.
I do have chickens in my backyard, and put their food out nightly. That may be one thing that is attracting them........if I eliminate what currently is out there, will new ones just move in?

my neighbor had 5 parrots in a huge back yard cage...
it is a safe bet the rats ate greater than 50% of the food..

I feed my chickens in the morning so the feeder is empty at night. I'll give them some treats (table scraps) in the evening to tide them over. They clean out the scraps bowl in minutes...so again, no food for rats.
