I remember when that picture hit the papers, it was one of the major turning points of anti-war sentiments of the American people, along with the Pentagon Papers. Sad thing is, the photograph did not show the 35 bound and gagged people in the ditch that Lem had just murdered, most of them police wives and children. This was the picture the press wanted, just as many of the pictures that define a moment in history that becomes a turning point.

Because they don't make an AR16

I'm surprised no one bit on this.
It's one of those subjects that's just hard to nail down, because people's "philosophies of use" are different.
Pros and cons to both, I suppose.
I'll throw out my preference of impingement, because of simplicity (less parts, lighter). I can "deal" with the spent gas/fouling.

Bushmaster XM-15E2S with EOTech 552.

Present.
Currently have a M4 Build. Currently working on another that I have the upper built for already. It's a CMMG A3 upper, with a Bushmaster barrel, carbine gas system and standard iron sites. Thinking about getting an essential arms lower to complete it.

Impingement vs piston
I have impingement. If kept reasonably clean it is not an issue. If you are a person who seldom or never cleans your weapon, go with piston.
If impingement is kept reasonably clean, then piston is a solution to a non-existant problem. Keep in mind that the US military uses impingment system in very dirty and hostile environments and gets excellent service out of them.
Impingement pros
1) simpler - less parts
2) generally considered more accurate - less moving parts (probably splitting hairs here)
3) less expensive - less moving parts
4) lighter weight - less parts
5) very reliable if given reasonable care
6) very mature and tested system - all the bugs worked out
Piston Pros
1) more reliable if you seldom clean your weapon
2) runs a little cleaner and cooler
But a downside is that all piston system AR´s are not equal as this is not a milspec design. Some are poorly designed and prone to failure. It is not yet a mature system in the AR platform in all makes and models. But given a few more years it likely will be.
IMHO.
Original AR´s are impingement driven.
All AK´s are piston driven.

I was thinking about doing the .22 upper too...but I found out that CMMG makes a .22 conversion bolt for your AR15.

Thanks Jimbeaux, nicely laid out. Something I haven't really looked into much.

Did anyone go with a .30 cal upper? Which one?

As in .308? If that's what you mean you need a different lower.
If you mean a 7.62 x 39 I have two stripped lowers and I am thinking about doing one in 5.56 and the other in 7.62x39
