Honda Rubicon 500 - starting running issues

have a rubicon that has been put up for a few months, last week it was driven a few times and ran fine. a few hours after the last ride it wouldn't crank at all. I figured it was spark plug...so today changed spark plug, oil and air filter. wouldn't start at first but a few minutes later it cranked right up, road it around for 15 minutes and then just let it idle for a half hour. turned it off and let it sit for 15 minutes, went to start it again and it cranked up but turned off after about 10 seconds. have sprayed starter and ran it hard for a few seconds and then it continues to sputter out...any ideas on the issue? i'm thinking maybe bad gas

I'd check the battery. A week battery can cause similar issues. No guarantee but that is an easy, quick check. Depending on age of gas, I'd drain it completely and start fresh. Make sure you getting a good steady flow from the petcock while draining. Next thing I would do is pull the carb, remove bowl, remove jets. Clean jets, reassemble, fresh gas, crank it up.

You didn't state the year.
If fuel injected honda:
1) has your air filter disintegrated into the motor
2) is your spark plug the color of wesley snipes
3) does your gas smell like gas or smell like homeless wine mixed with piss
4) is your battery holding a charge
5) does your fuel pump click on when the key turns on
6) fuel injector
7) idle air control valve
8) fuel pump
Fixed.

2018 - fuel injected
Air filter not dissentagrated and changed...gas smells fine..just added some fuel treatment and going to sit overnight...can't figure out how to drain gas

Assuming this is a model with a carb… Turn fuel off at peacock valve on tank. Disconnect fuel line at carb. Ring clamp most likely. Pull fuel line out as much as you can and point into a reservoir and turn peacock valve on tank to “on”.
Watch the fuel coming out. Petcock valves often disintegrate a bit and that crap goes right into the carb. This can cause issues. May also be a gummed up carb. Usually they will start and backfire a bit but stall out when you give throttle.

Pointless if more than a few months old.
Disconnect line running from tank to carb.
Route into jug. Cycle key to cycle the fuel pump. When empty, add a gallon of fresh gas, and a small amount of xylene (or berrymans gas treatment if you dont have it). Start and allow to idle.
If it dies soon after, likely idle air control.
