Was riding through my buddy's property last week with a little crew. We hopped out the boat, threw the Cajun anchor in the mud and started trekking up to the ridge. At first glance, I thought everybody was carrying .45-70's, but I notice that one of these guys has a .22 mag slung over his shoulder. Is that dude crazy? I could see a well-placed behind the eyes shot taking a little pig down, but would the OB trust a .22 mag on a hog hunt through thick shite with not much visibility?

It will kill a hog but I wouldn't use it here.

I dont hate the idea. I can probably put more lead down range more maccurately and faster with a semi 22 mag than a high powered bolt gun. Or even a semi high powered rifle.

But im not probably chosing a bolt action 22 over something a little stronger.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: Man I hope for your sake that your group is positively IDing their targets.

you guys must hog hunt different than we do. We bay em, catch em, and knife em. Never shot one while hunting in my life.

Apparently LDWF thinks .22 mag is a great hog hunting round since they prohibit anything bigger than that on WMA's for nearly the entire hunting season

I mostly shoot them while bow hunting, but the .22 mag is perfect for a pig. I've killed a couple with a .17 hMR.

Right behind the ear. Same rule with a .22lr. That said, I wouldn't purposefully carry anything less than a .223 and similar small bore, high-velocity centerfire cartridges.

Most older hog hunters around here use a .22 mag,and it really is a pretty bad arse little round.

Rimfire has to be used successfully for a lot of of public land hunters due to season restrictions. I took one with my bow Tuesday, but just bought a 17 Win Super Mag and hope to get it sighted in tomorrow then maybe make a stalk through the woods and take a hog. I have friends that have taken them with shoulder shots with a 17 HMR, doesn't leave a blood trail but will kill the hog. If the HMR will get it done I have full confidence in the WSM.

I have a friend who's killed a pile of hogs with a 22mag. My issue is finding them in the scope and making a good shot when things are hot and heavy. I was squirrel hunting with my 22mag a few weeks ago and walked up on a pig that was laying in a mud hole. We both saw each other at the same time. Thankfully, he took off in the opposite direction. I tried to get a shot off but couldn't get a clear view in my scope through the brush. I much prefer my open sight 1895 or an AR with a red dot when pig hunting.

I know, but if someone was going to try to take a deer with a rifle outside of deer gun season....what makes them think that person wouldnt take the shot with a .22mag or just bring a high powered rifle even when its not legal? All it does is restrict the hunters who follow the rules

I wouldn't recommend this round. I tried it once and it didn't work even with a shot to the face. I jumped a hog with her piglets a while back and the mom stood facing me at about 20-25 yards looking like she was going to charge me. I shot her right between the eyes and she ran off still very much alive. Also, if you hunt public land, the 17 isn't legal.
