I’ve always kept a Frogg Toggs poncho for hiking with a backpack. When using it, you keep your backpack covered too. Haven’t used it for more than 1 hr at a time fortunately.

IMO the best shell is the Marmot Alpinist. I have two of the earlier iterations of this jacket and they are simply better than anything I have ever worn in the category. If you want a significant step down in price then the Minimalist Pro. It still has pit zips but it is a little less technical looking so you can also wear it more casually and get double duty out of it.

Marmot does shells well. I'm partial to the Precip as a value pick, although reviews on the newer ones are mixed.

It really isn't that breathable

Curious technical statement. It drives water and sweat and moisture outward. I once wore wigwam wool socks with a pair of boots that had goretex... went riding on a motorcycle. Feet froze to death. Painful, even.

No lie, I then swapped to birkenstocks, same socks. Feet warmed right up the second the windchill stopped. Roasting warm feet.

So I would contest that goretex is not breathable. In terms of actual real-life experience. But I like seeing the other shite you posted there. That's gonna be worth some research on my end.

I like that you still support it.

Also, Marmot is the shite. Totally agree with you there.

That surprises me a bit; I was never really happy with mine. Replaced it with one of OR's helium(I forget what they call it?) 4-way stretch waterproof fabric. It breathes better than any waterproof fabric I've ever tried. It packs down into a pocket, so not the same durability as nylon/goretex, but so far it's 100% waterproof.
