Looking to buy an old one. 01-04 4x4. From what I can tell, the main things that may need work with high mileage are timing belt, water pump and there may be frame rust.

Are there good deals to be made on these? Hard to tell just looking online.

Thanks

Too old and if there's one thing to avoid, its the tin worm.

Never had a problem with either of mine, but you probably won't find a good deal on one. The frame rust isn't really an issue unless the truck came from where they use salt on the roads. I think that was more of an issue with the 05+ ones though. Mine stayed caked with mud and never rusted

Get one with a locker. Night and day difference

Just rolled 247,000 on the '98 I have. 4wd v6 automatic. Love that thing. Only thing I've had to do was the valve cover gaskets.

1997 4x4 ext cab 5 sped at ~ 200K. Speedo just stopped working and radiator spewed it's contents. New radiator coming in by Friday. Overall real happy with what I got out of this truck so far.

Man, my old lady (no pics) just parted ways with her '94. Had 230k on it. Only thing she replaced was the water pump at about 180k. Got $5500 for it

Right over 120K on my '05 V6 PreRunner, just changed the serp. belt this weekend although it definitely didn't need to be.

I'm gonna ride this baby into the ground, though I have a bunch of private/custom made items on it so it may be unappealing to most, but it's mine.

My FIL wants to buy it from me when I step up to full size, he may not be around then though.

When I worked at a dealership in Alexandria, we would take trade ins for like 5,000 and turn around and sell them the same day for 12,500...that was about 5 years ago so not sure how the demand is now a days..

On a side note my dad still has an 89 model with over 300k... It is rusted out in the bed and doesn't run very well.. He just drives is behind his house to a few deer stands..

if you're going that old on one definitely get the 4 banger. That v-6 is just too much of a maintenance hog.

That's what I've read. I'm finding trucks with 140~k for 12ish and 200~k for 7ish. If I could roll one past a quarter million without any major repairs I'd be happy

The crew cab 04's usually command a premium, my old man sold his a few years back - mistake. I'd rather the 04 over the 07 I have, they're (pre-05's) better made vehicles imo, but my 07 is still stout and tight at 178K.

Being in the automotive repair business for over 20 years and having owned both. The 4.0l v6 in the 05 and later tacos is a gem. Chain drive timing, and the transmissions in them are worlds apart as well as far as maintenance.

They are also much roomier.
For the woods, hunting camp environment the older models are better equipped because of the shorter and narrower wheelbase but the motors and transmissions are just maintenance hogs as i previously stated. Ball joints,u-joints,control arms always going bad on them as well. Not so much with the newer tacos even tho i did have to replace 2 u-joints and one ball joint in my truck.
