I’ve decided that I will try to add morning turkey hunts to my spring crappie fishing routine.

The problem is, I don’t really have any padnuhs from whom to get turkey hunting advice.

Based on YT videos, it looks like I should get a decent box call, a couple of decoys, and maybe a blind setup.

I hate hunting from tent blinds, so I’m thinking one of those umbrella blinds will do fine.

Can any of you recommend a good call & decoy combo?

Locate turkey
Make hen noises
If he replies sit dead still right where you are. Don't call unless you're close to somewhere you can sit still. A little calling goes a long way
Best advice I ever got from an old turkey hunter was if one ever answered you to sit tight right there. He is going to come check it out. It may be 15min or it may be 3 hours but he is coming. Patience has killed more turkeys than anything else

Do you call while you wait, or just sit?

Can’t help you but I always liked this saying: To a deer, every man is a tree. To a turkey, every tree is a man.

Call in 90second spurts every 5-10 minutes. If one is gobbling call just often enough keep him closing the distance. If he is not advancing be a little more aggressive. If he is coming fast call less. Play hard to get so to speak.

Has worked pretty well for me.

I’m a big fan of the half umbrella “blinds” - used them for years - as I don’t like tents either. Just buy a box call and a “pot & peg” you like - honestly they all sound like hens - with some practice and experience on your part. Patience and persistence. Decoys - a hen and jake - I like the soft models you can fold and stuff in your hunting vest/backpack.

There was a thread a couple weeks ago on tips for beginning turkey hunters on this board - you might try to find it.

Decoys often hurt more than they help

Get a mouth call and practice practice practice.

Can run-and-gun for them, especially if they’re actively gobbling, but a more success-prone method (albeit more boring) is to set up somewhere, get comfortable, and “deer hunt” them from 11:00am to 1:00pm. This works especially when gobblers are stuck with real hens.

I would recommend a turkey vest with a seat built in, keeps all your gear organized. Also an inflatable decoy is easier to carry than the collapsible rubber ones.

I agree, screw the blind that was my mistake first year. I would get a Lynch 101 call on eBay for 15-20 bucks, some light Camo in mossy oak or whatever have from deer season, an owl call, and some turkey shells.

You basically get to woods hour before light and as soon comes up start walking and listening. Stop every 200 yards or so and do a few clucks and or yelp calls. Keep walking until you get a response, be it a cluck etc. You are really listening for any gobbling. When u hear that run toward it ASAP. When are are close enough, 500 yards or less, find a big tree where he can’t see you from direction he is gobbling from and sit down, put out decoys if you want too. One cheap academy jake and a feeding hen or 2, and pray that feathered devil doesn’t see you. Easy right? Lol. Be patient. They will sneak up on you. Wait at least 45 minutes or hour if you had one gobbling coming in before you give up.

Goof luck.
