Heat pump or gas furnace: help me decide...

Trying to decide between a heat pump and gas furnace. Home in south Louisiana.
I have experience with a gas furnace in my current house but no experience with a heat pump. From what I gather:
Gas furnace
Pros: heats up faster, air gets hotter
Cons: dry heat (hotter air may be con)
Heat pump:
Pros: doesn’t dry air as much, gentler heat
Cons: not great for really cold days
Still up in the air on which is cheaper to operate.

Can you give me your experience on heat pumps?

In south LA you ain’t going to,use heat much to begin with so don’t worry about it being efficient, and any savings you may get will be countered with more wear and tear on your compressor, go with gas.... I have 4 units at different properties, one gas furnace and 3 heat pumps (no gas available) ..... I HATE heat pumps, nothing but problems, I have already taken the reversing valve out of one of them and operate it as strictly electric heat, about to do that with a second one and the third I bypass the pump by just using emergency heat

Are these old units, new units? Brands? You purchased or came with the properties?

2 York’s and a Rheem,York’s are 12 years old, problems started at about year 5, I built that building, have had to replace both compressors , Rheem 6 years old, I purchased 2 years ago just had to replace control board
And even when they are working they are not very good
Rheem unit with gas furnace is 14 years old, been great so far

I have a dual fuel system which works like a heat pump but when it gets cold instead of using emergency heat strips it kicks over to gas. Going on 10 years now and have had zero problems with it.

Heat pump in the deep south.
My latest house has them and I was skeptical at first but they work just fine.
Just how often are you running your heater in south Louisiana?

If you access to natural gas then a furnace is a no brainer. If you're on propane than I'd lean toward heat pump. There are tons of heat pumps installed with more being put in all the time. My american standard guy almost always puts in a heat pump when furnace isn't feasible and since he services a lot of rural areas he installs a ton of pumps. Straight electric heat strips are almost obsolete as far as he's concerned.

I have no access to gas at my home and have heat pumps...
I CAN NOT stand them if it's cold. They never seem to get caught up, they don't heat well. If I could do a gas furnace I would do it immediately.
The ages of mine are two are 2009, and just put an addition on and one is 6 months old it doesn't heat either.

This is what I heat my house with. Works fine, but my bill doubles in the winter months. Big reason, I have high ceiling which is great for summer months.

If you do go with a heat pump, put it as far away from your bedroom windows as possible. Idiot contractor put them right outside our bedroom window and that bastard is loud as hell. I’m going to eventually build something to go around it to dampen the sound a bit.

This is what required me to have heat pump the one time I had one. Gas is now a requirement if I move.

This is the reason why.

What no one has asked yet is, are you considering a water source heat pump or an air source heat pump. I have a 20 year old once through water source heat pump and it has been great. I will admit that my situation is somewhat unique. Water flows from the well, through the heat pump, and out into a pond. If I were starting from scratch, I would have routed the water through the slab prior to discharge in the pond.

Gas furnace. Heat pumps aren’t meant for south LA

again, i haven't made a decision but it seems like they're literally meant for south LA (or places that don't get extreme cold).
