Advice for finding/catching specks this time of year? What artificials should I go with?

Gulp Alive swimming mullet in white or their shrimp in New Penny, both under popping cork.

In 6-8' water how deep should I run the bait under the cork? What kind of action should I give it?

I'm totally new to saltwater fishing other than putting a live shrimp on a hook and throwing it out from a dock...

Recently gained access to a boat/camp so it's on!

Good luck if you've never fished vermillion bay before. Where are you going out of?

We're leaving from a buddy's dock on Cypremort Point, one of those high roller camps on the first gravel turn off... He circled some spots on a map for me, but we're going to be going on our own.

ETA - He circled the "trash pile" and some hotspots around South Marsh Island. Also told us we could probably fish the docks on the East side of Cypremort PT and do ok.

Yeah just sometimes if you're not in the exact 10 foot by 10 foot square you won't get a bite

troutwise, i've caught them on gulp shrimp under popping cork near shark bayou. Also dragging swim bait very slowly on bottom. Really did best in kayak just trolling with pearl swimbaits on bottom near pilings by north end of state park. REALLY slowly on bottom.

How do you determine appropriate depth under the popping cork?

I heard they were catching at the trash pile last week on live shrimp on the bottom. Good luck

Fished Cove and Trashpile today.

3 guys, 6 fish. Saw 4 fish caught at Trashpile.

The 6 we caught at the Cove were the only ones I saw caught.

Probably 40 boats b/w the 2 spots. We were Cove early and Trashpile late. Left at 12:30. Water clarity sucked, but tmrw and Sunday will probably clear up. I would make sure to fish sun up, tide movement, and sundown.

3ft. under a cork, and tight line. Live shrimp would do best, but we fished plastic.

Don't drag your bait on the bottom at the Trashpile, it's named that for a reason.

Oh, and one more thing. Before kickoff, you might not need a boat, just be nice to the occupants, and you could probably walk from boat to boat wherever you want to go.

The people at the Point are real friendly. They like to bait your hook for you, and take an occasional peak in your ice chest, too.

Yeah, my buddy just said he'll be able to make it now and he's thinking we'll hit the South side of Marsh Island to avoid the crowd. Never used a popping cork but I'm definitely going to try it out.

I'll post a pic if we get anything good going Sunday...

If there is such a thing, vermillion bay has to be the armpit of LA fishing.

UPDATE: Had a fun trip, we ended up catching 11 specks between 3 of us and though it could've been more action-packed, the weather was great and we got to have a fish fry in the end.

We caught 3 at the "trash pile", 3 at "the cove", and 5 next to this abandoned dock on Cypremort point that is becoming popular from what I hear.
