I keep going back in forth between wanting to take a quick trip to Kentucky or Tennessee for public land deer hunting come this fall.
Has anyone hunted any public lands in Tennessee? Looking mostly on the western side of the state due to the drive.
Thanks

I’ve been looking hard into that area of Kentucky but was wondering if I’d be passing up deer to go find deer.

Tennessee doesnt have a lot of agriculture in my experience. That’s what makes kentucky better I think.
I’ve hunted tennessee and there’s some good bucks, but there’s not a ton of them. Tennessee’s or at least central Tenn rut is a little later than normal around Nov 20-28th also if that matters.

Thats going to be the case no matter where you go. Find some geography that you like and go, don't worry so much about best chance for killing something

Yeah I guess your right about that.
I’ve never hunted Ag fields so maybe Kentucky is the area should stick to.

Is Kentucky over the counter tags or is it a draw?

There is big deer in TN however they are concentrated around the area south of Nashville that is all private.

Not sure how much private land there is to hunt but Haywood county has some monsters.
Friend of mine use to lease a place there. That place along with the surrounding farms had practiced strict QDMA guidelines for the past 20 years.
Those farms were producing 150-180+ class deer every year.
He invited me out to hunt with him to thin out the doe herd. We set up and had 3 bucks in the field that were all 160-170 class deer. Killed me that I could only shoot a doe.

I do remember reading about a giant deer that was taken in Tennessee a few years ago, not sure where though.

I am curious about this also....surely there ain't a state east of the Mississippi and South of Ohio where they don't sell general deer season over the counter deer tags is there?? I know there are draw hunts for special seasons and areas but surely to goodness there isn't anywhere in the region where a man can't walk into walmart and but a license to shoot a random deer is there????

There ain't good deer along the Mississippi in Tennessee? Surely there are??? I haven't been in the area for many years but I remember it being a vast agricultural area with loads of grain being grown. I know the duck/goose and dove shooting was great back in the 80's...

In west TN if it isn't swamp land it's farm land, not sure where the idea that there isn't farm land in TN is coming from.
Yes there are deer there but not sure how much public land is available to hunt.

I see...thats the way I remember West Tennessee...lost of water and lots or ag. Only thing keeping it from being akin to central Mississippi in terms of game would be its being further north and winters being harsher...
