Has anyone ever tried to use inshore setups for nearshore fishing?

We are heading to Destin in just under a month and I plan on bringing the yak to do some fishing. I already have two days of inshore fishing lined up, but I'd like to get offshore weather permitting.

The water drops to 50ft about a mile off the beach and I have a few wrecks/reefs marked. They catch kings, spanish, small mahi and 2-5 lb snapper over these spots. Is it feasible to try and catch these with inshore tackle setup? Medium/medium-heavy rods with Shimano Curados spooled with heavy braid? I would like to do some nearshore trolling if possible but I don't want to go spend money on new rods/reels when I will rarely use them.

ETA: If anyone is going to be on vacation in the Navarre/Destin/Miramar area June 14-19 and wants to fish let me know.

I'd like to pull some X-Raps or Yozuri Crystal Minnows and do some vertical jigging, I was just curious if those inshore rod/reel combos will be able to handle them plus fish.

I have caught 20lb bull reds on my trout rod before, but those offshore fish fight a little different.

Gives you another excuse to buy more fishing stuff.

This was my first thought. Just work that drag and have a good hold (or tied off) to your gear. Worst case, you break off a few fish and head to the nearest tackle shop and pick up a new rig or two on your vacation. I think most of what you would catch in that close will be fine regardless.

I go with a guide very year our of Pensacola. I always bring my wacky worm rig and have a blast with it. Braid to swivel then 15 lb fluoro. Lots of snapper and mackerel landed.

Use 30# braid and you should be fine. Snapper don’t wreck you as often as a grouper would, and most of the wrecks in that area are natural bottom. Use light wire leader or buy a couple cheap straw rigs for Spanish. Don’t want a 1# Spanish swimming off with expensive plugs.

Spanish, small mahi and small snapper won't be a problem. But if you hang a decent king you may have a problem. Not enough drag on a Curado. He will spool you in 2.5 seconds. When he hits the end of that "heavy braid" you may not be able to break him off before he breaks your rod or bends your spool.

If I was going to attempt this, I would use lighter braid so that I had as much line on the reel as possible. Easier to break off, for one. But also if you can get enough line out, and the fish is running perpendicular to the rod, having to drag all of that line through the water, you may have a prayer of tiring him out. If he runs straight away from you you're not going to stop him.

The old green Curados with the small arbor would hold a ton of light braid and would be my reel of choice if I was going to attempt to stop a king with a Curado. Keep a knife handy in case you need to cut a fish off to save your tackle.

I think that's going to be my plan. Do y'all use live bait or artificials?

That is kind of my worry. Would you recommend something like 30#?

Heavy braid with a wire leader should do the trick. You may be in a pickle if you hook into a big king or mahi though But I bet it would be a frickin blast hooking into something big in the yak. The most I’ve caught on inshore tackle was some real big Spanish Macks.. even those shredded through our tackle.

that would be like catching a 4lb snapper if that. Then you worry about it getting back in the wreck, rig and cutting your line.

Have caught mangroves in perdido bay on bass setups. As others have pointed out the biggest issue is you won't have the rod power to just winch the fish out of the structure so you'll have to rely on drag to wear it down. The fish's first move is going to be to cover, but if you can keep pressure on it without it cutting the braid then it will eventually come up. Just have fun with it and try to find something to fish they can't wrap you up in.

I throw Kastmaster spoons at schooling fish like mackerel and bonita, then change to circle hook and chunks of some small baitfish for the snappers.

I've caught piles of Kings, from a kayak,on a curado 200 up to 25lbs. Trying to stop them is when you'll get into trouble. Let them run. I wouldn't even consider dropping down for snapper with that set up, though. Hanging a snapper well above 5 pounds is definitely not unheard of. Or a cobia. Then you're in a world of trouble.

ETA: Assuming you're talking about red snapper. For mangroves that'd be fine.

I fish in Key Largo with a Cuban buddy. They use a chum bag/block and cut bait into tiny pieces and use little hooks and just keep freelining them into the chum line. (Just keep stripping off line by hand until something grabs them. They’re using spinning tackle slightly heavier than typical trout tackle. and catch yellow tails, mangrove, etc.

Getting them up higher in the water column would give you more leverage than trying to pull them up from 50ft. Might be worth trying if that way.

I wouldn't take a kayak in and out of the East Pass, even on a good day. But I'm a coward. It's possible your balls are bigger than mine.

Hey, you said it not me.

We have a house on the beach by the Crab Trap so I am just going to launch from there. Its about 1.5 miles out to the middle of Sand Flea so it shouldn't be to bad weather permitting.

For anyone else who is following this, I came across THIS POST from Nick at Navarre Kayak Fishing talking about how they kayak fish for Snapper. They also have one for KINGS

That's pretty much the gist of it. Pray you find a snapper before the trig's find you.

People catch Mahi on 10wt fly rods. That's like a medium heavy bass rod.
