Knows his laws, but is a complete douche. My guess is that he is some hipster that just got out law school and was walking up and down a street to get the cops called on him
When most people see someone open carrying, they just think the people who are packing heat are cops

Portland is a very hippie/liberal city.
I'm not sure OC is legal there.

I open carry sometimes. And have had a cop ask me about it. I was polite and so was he and we had no issue, but obviously he wasn't called to investigate me either.
From the video though, the cop had no right to take that mans gun from his holster.

Cool, thanks. I don't venture to near the OT. I think both parties handled the situation as best as you can expect. The commenters are euro trash that don't understand our rights as citizens. The guy had to stand up to the cops, it's about the only way they understand things.

The whole removing the pistol from the guys holster is being taught as a standard procedure for the safety of the officer. Since the guy did not object to it, it was not an "illegal seizure" like some on the OT claimed. If he had said no, it would have been a whole different story.

The guy wanted his gun back, I would say he didn't consent.

it seems only d-bags open carry when they don't have to
anybody with enough sense just gets an open carry permit

So I'm a d-bag and now need a permit to open carry??

Imagine if cops didn't check people who open carry. No convicted felon can get a consealed permit so then they could just open carry and know that the police won't stop and check them for fear of violating someones rights.
If that was your stolen pistol the guy had on his side wouldn't you hope a cop would check the serial numbers on it?
Or what if that was your sisters ex-bf on his way to judge her to the face since she put a protection order on him yesterday.
People talk about systems failing but if the officer has no right to stop him, no right to ask for I.D, no right to check the guys weapon then what's the point.
Safest way for the officer to check this guys weapon is for the officer to handle the gun. Say the guy unholsters to hand the gun over, flags the officer with it. Is the officer to just stand there and wait for it to go off in order to determine if it was accidental?
If you open carry, don't be a prick about it just because you can. Don't put officers in bad situations, and don't put yourself in one either.
ETA: Didn't watch the video but pretty sure I know the one being discussed. If anything I said isn't relative then disreguard

This is what I said earlier in this thread
The cop in the vid actually pointed it at the civilian.

I think someone in the OT thread said it was Portland, Maine.

I need to watch the video before I comment further but the OT thread just frustrates me. I have to stay out of it. Too many people hiding behind the internet with unreasonable ideas and beliefs

That's why I posted it here, I figured us OBers would have similar views on the incident.

After watching the video again, the guy did not consent to seizure of the weapon so it was an "illegal seizure"
The officer openly admitted that he did not suspect him of any crimes. And admitted that the open carry of the gun was the only reason he was talking to him.

no, but understand that the cops will get called on you, and do go off spitting some legal talk, just let the cops do their job, and you will get your gun back and be on your way.
the guy in the video was in the right..... but handled it like a complete douche
