I have never traded nor sold a gun before. I have a Marlin/Glenfield 30/30 from the 80s. It never gets used and just sits in a closet. I have a 12 year old and would like to get him a basic, tool-like 20 gauge auto. What can I expect?

Could probably trade one for one at a gun store or pawn shop.

Am I looking at even, added cash or what?

Might be able to trade it straight up for a BPS. Though it would probably be easier to trade or for an 870. I would prefer a BPS.

Might have to give a little for the Browning and expect a little for the Remington...

Looking for auto. I'll check a shop down the street today to see what they have.

Probably even or, at worst, a little added cash.

Depends on what auto you’re looking at. For a Remington 1187, probably even. For a benell, added cash

This would be perfect.

What brands are you looking at? I am in the market for a 20 auto at the moment too. My son is almost 8 and will still shoot his .410 a few years, but I have around 530 bucks in Cabelas points and a $50 gift certificate to spend. Went to look at a Stoeger last Saturday but there was a "shotgun" guy there that showed me a Montefeltro. Not sure if I want to cough up 4-500 extra bucks but it was super nice. I like using my 20g 870 a couple times a year so I would want an auto that has a regular stock and a youth stock to interchange. Also When the time is right, my son can start with youth stock and grow into the adult stock.

I said the same thing, but I don't want it failing to eject 5-6 shells every box like my 870 does.

Did you see that Hatfield for $260 at Cabelas? Saw mixed reviews on youtube. Actually a pretty nice looking gun, but seems like a "get what you pay for deal".

I have owned my Montefeltro for almost 2 years now, and I don't know if I would trade it for any other 20ga shotgun. I've been shooting it on Thursdays at Bridgeview more than my 12ga. Sometimes I swear that shoot the Montefeltro better than the 12ga.

They make a Montefeltro that comes with a youth stock and a full size stock. I can tell you this if you bought that shotgun for your son make sure to keep the youth stock. Your son would be able to pass it down to his son when the time comes.

Abracadabra!

Hatfield @ Cabelas

They didn't have any in the store.

This is what I was getting at while leaning towards forking out extra cash. Still on the fence.

This is mostly to get him started. If it turns out he likes shooting/hunting, I'll buy him something better later.

Academy has the Winchester 20 ga youth compact pump for $287. I know you didn’t mention new but just a PSA.
