I need advice on which setup would best fit my needs. New to inshore/NEAR coast fishing. Looking for something that is as accurate as possible at mapping reefs, wellheads, etc. Partly to find the fish and partly to avoid beating up the transom and lower unit. I'll be fishing the entire LA coast. I know some aftermarket chips have boundaries that fall in the middle of the state. I'm fine with a 5" or 7" screen. Looking to spend $500-700...if possible!
By the way, I'm not looking for boating safety tips!

Good luck.

I asked the same thing about Navionics earlier today and got a zero.

BTW, I just bought a hummingbird helix 5 SI. I'm also new to near shore fishing and thought that world be a good beginner unit.

Get a lowrance unit. Hook 7 or 7 hds. Something like that. Pair it up with a sat card from seapickle on here.

Lowrance HDS 7.

The HDS is significantly better than the Hook 7/HDI 7. 100% worth the extra money

I just bought a Garmin EchoMap 53CV from Amazon for $400 then paid $100 for the Garmin Louisiana Bayou map which covers everything south of I-10. If you look at the Garmins just remember that if the number (53 for ex) is an odd number it comes with the Lake charts. Even # models come with the coastal charts which are mainly for offshore. I've only used mine in fresh water north of I-10 so far and the maps are decent I guess. First new GPS I've owned. I did a lot of researching and it seemed like the preloaded Garmin maps were better than Lowrance. Plus I would have had to spend a couple hundred more for a Lowrance model that is capable of downloading aftermarket maps to (according to the Bass Pro salesman who might've been wrong).

I would suggest a lowrance elite 7ti. 5" screens are too small. The Ti has on operating system like a hds and a good processor.

You can't go wrong with an hds but it would be out of your price range

Stay away from the hook series.

Good to know. What area(s) does your card cover? Could you send me a screen shot example so I can look at the detail? Doesn't matter where the location of screenshot is. My email is jnoegel@mac.com. Thanks!

This. The Ti was more than I wanted to spend and the Hook series maps sucked so I settled with the Garmin 5" EchoMap.

I haven't seen anyone recommend Garmin. Did I make a mistake SeaPickle?

No but I can't make maps for Garmin.
I could be wrong but I think more inshore coastal guys use lowrance and offshore guys choose Garmin over lowrance.
Mapping capabilities would be a priority in my decision if I was buying a gps for inshore fishing.

I've looked at the Garmin 54 quite a bit. Two friends have them and say they're very user friendly. The problem I have with Garmin is that they don't allow 3rd party cards. I don't like the idea of only being able to use their maps when I may prefer another version

I've been in 2 offsbore boats with a Garmin lately and both had us on land while we were running to the gulf. Lowrance would have also but as you said they allow maps. Big advantage down here.

I think I've settled on the Lowrance Elite 7ti. There is a $100 rebate if purchased before 7/31, so that makes it even more appealing. Before I pull the trigger, are there any others that should be considered?

Nah that's a good unit. I've used it a good bit. Performs very similar to my HDS.

What is your opinion of the Navionics maps? I found a used Helix 5 SI on CL that was still in the wrapper for a hell of a buy. It came with a Navionics Gulf SD card.

I know that screen is small but it was a hell of a buy and a good one for me to learn WTF I'm doing with one since I'm a rookie at this.

I want one of the 7 inchers that I can Bluetooth to my tablet but that'll have to wait.

What questions do you have? I have a navionics chip in my Helix 9 and I have been very happy with it. I have used it in North Alabama, the Panhandle, and the Keys.

No specific questions yet. Just the overall quality and accuracy of the maps is all.

I'm sure once I start playing with it I'll have specific questions.
