So I have been hunting a few times, but have never owned my own shotgun. Have always borrowed one.
Well my grandmother pasted away not to long ago, and my mothers cousin had my grandfathers shotgun in safe keeping, and wanted to give to me.

However, I am having a problem dating the shotgun. Been checking the internet but having trouble finding what year it was made.

It is a Browning 16 gauge, and on the barrel says made in Belgium. On the shotgun it also says X40965, so maybe that is the serial number?

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help out.

ETA: Also, it is an A-5

Not the best pics but

Is it a pump or an auto-loader like the A-5?

I wanna say that denotes 1965 on a browning A-5 I'm assuming...

Find an email address for Browning and send them the serial number and ask for a date. That would be the most effective but probably not the speediest.

My brother told me I should sell it, but the gun is just to nice to sell to anyone. Want to keep this gun in the family if I can.

If its a browning a-5 sweet sixteen then you've got yourself a very valuable gun.

Didn't even think about it, that makes sense.

I might just do that. Want to know as much about this gun so I'm not just holding on to something I have no clue about.

Thats what I was hoping, but my close friend actually has a sweet sixteen, and it is engraved on the gun. There is no engraving on this shotgun, but it could just be different years too.

Thanks guys, I never was. Even though I when I saw prices for it is as high as my tuition.

Some things are just better kept with the family. Who knows, maybe I will have a kid some day who wants to hunt too.

It's still very valuable even without the engraving.

I would send the serial number to browning. They will likely send you everything you could ever want to know about the gun.

Use it, but make sure you take care of it. I'm jealous

Browning has a website that explains it. The X stands for "Light" as opposed to a Magnum.

I have the A-5 Magnum 12 from the same year... and I just looked this up.

Check this out...

Eta: I was way off...

I agree with your brother, sell it. Take the money and buy a gun you'll use. In my opinion a 16 gauge is THE most useless of all.

Why? Anyone who can handle a 16 gauge should be handling a 20 or now with Benelli's inertia thingy, a 12.

Not to mention the availability of 16 gauge shells, compared to 20 or 12.

Are you the guy that in previous threads said you didn't understand people keeping a gun because of sentimental value or something like that?

No way I'd sell that gun if I was the OP
