Possibly looking for a golden puppy and figured you baws would have good info. The dog will hunt some, but not hard.
Thanks

Bought mine from Rhonda's Retrievers in Enterprise, Ms. Hunting line is prevalent in their dogs.

My wife got her pup from Triple L in Many, LA near Alexandria. He's not the ideal hunter or anything but doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body. Great family dog and friendly to everyone.

My dad has one getting pole axed even as we speak. He should have some puppies available in 4 months or so providing ole boy does his job.

If you plan on hunting them check into the bloodlines hard. I'm not saying all of them, but a lot of the ones I've hunted over that come from around here don't have a lot of drive to hunt.

Agreed, though I have seen a Goldmine dog hunt and she ran well.

If you're serious about a field breed, then look into Topbrass, Skyriver, Thistlerock, and Adirondac. There are several good breeders across the country that keep very clean field bloodlines, but those are the four that come to mind immediately. These dogs aren't cheap. $2000-$2500 is about the minimum for those four breeders, but every once in awhile you'll see a litter come up for a bit cheaper.

I have a Topbrass dog. She's the best golden I've ever hunted over, and one of the best bird dogs I've ever hunted over period. Can't recommend them enough.

Whichever you choose, I would recommend paying very close attention to inbreeding in the dog's pedigree. Goldens are notorious for health problems and inbreeding makes problems exponentially more likely at every stage.

eta: none of this is saying you can't get a golden from a local breeder to hunt by any means, but dogs from those breeders come from very long, true field lines and your chances of getting a jam up bird dog are exponentially higher.

You can go on the AKC website I think it is and find owners that have registered dogs having pups soon. Just thought I'd mention it as a means outside of the known big breeders. I don't have any experience with finding pure hunting dogs, but I've had Golden's all of my life and they have all had plenty good enough instincts to fetch some ducks for me.
