GMC K5 for sale Opinions?

Looking to get a GMC or Chevy K5 to fix up for weekend driving. I had my eye on this one. Only problems not stated in ad are a leaking heater core, power steering hose leaks and tires have good threads but are cracking. It has a new crate engine, transmission runs strong and AC blows cold. This would be my first project like this so any opinions on price and condition will be appreciated.

They're great trucks no doubt.
If you can't do all the work needed to restore it yourself or have a good friend that can fill in the gaps where your skill level is lacking, then spend more and buy a truck that's already been restored. I have people that come into the shop on a daily basis wanting "help" on their restoration project and are blown away by the price of bodywork, paint & mechanical issues. if you're truly wanting to take on the challenge, do it yourself, mess it up, then do it again. You'll learn a lot.

I am good with mechanics and definitely up to the challenge. The only thing I might be willing to pay for is a paint job. The rest I would do myself. Do you think $5500 is a fair price for what it is?

Very easy to find parts for these truck. My question would be are the hose leaks from old hoses or connections. If it's from old hoses, that would be a red flag to me. Person that would replace the engine but use the old hoses probably didn't do the engine install correctly.

With the price of the truck and a paint job, you're already over $10k in it (for a "decent" paint job)
As far as $5500 for the base? I'd have to see it in person to tell that. Personally, I don't like the stock axles that came on those trucks, if they've been upgraded from the 10 bolts, I'd probably have no problem spending that or even a little more.

This is what I was looking for. I just wanted to make sure I don't overpay. I'll probably still try and offer him $4500 if everything looks as stated. Thanks again.

Doesn't look like a new GM crate motor in the pictures...

IMO $5500 is very high. That would be a $2500 truck around here.

Those old k5's used to not only like,, but, LOVE gas stations.
I know you said "just a weekender", but, you might be shocked to find out how bad the originals got,,, course gas was a lot cheaper then, but, everything is relative.
Ram Chargers and k5's used to race to the service station,,,,

For reference, I sold a 94 K1500 with tons of work done to it for $4000. Keep that in mind. It was in far better shape than that thing.

Yes yes yes yes and yes.
Especially if you have more money than time, because sure you can do this and that, but do you have the time to? You'll never (ever) make what you put into it, so save yourself some money, time, and headaches and buy one already done up.

I think that's a $2000-3000 truck. I love k5's. That one is rough

I spoke to the seller again. He says he does not have paperwork for said new engine as he bought the truck with it already installed, so I told him I can only assume it is not new. So far he has come down to $4k but I told him that is still way too high.

$2500 tops. I've been looking for years. For 5500/6000 you can buy one in damn good shape

Sold for $5200. If you are willing to drive and look you'll do great. I pulled a trigger on one that was in unreal condition for $6200. Then I found out we were having kid #3. Not a good fit at the time for 3 kids
sold for $6200

3500 maybe but what he is asking is way too much.

When you go look at it, watch out for rust underneath. Also, I'd only pay $2500 for it

the rear underneath the tailgate as well as behind the wheels on each quarter panel..
Here's two more...
The white one is an 1989 and has a few stock upgrades when Chevy changed a few things in 88.
$3800 with 57k miles
$1500

That's a shined up terd if I've ever seen one Body has NO rust but I a spot sprayed the nasty spots and leaked a little bondo in them.... just needs paint. Heater core has a leak? Try getting to that bastard and spending the rest of your life finding the bolts, nuts, screws etc. to get it back together. It does have a nice new evaporator on it....... dude put some serious coin into that.
Tell him I'll give you 1200 if you show me the original receipt for the "crate" motor.

On the serious side, that truck has recently sat up for a while. Look at the rust on the pulleys and the new belt. Dude's a pro at this flip and sell to rich folks.
