The amount of poo poo in the pasture will tell you.

I got pretty lucky. I bought my first couple of longhorn cows for $375 and $400 a head. Now they are bringing near $1/lbs. That's $1000 longhorn cows at the salebarn, which is wholesale. Unheard of...
Some of these black cows are bringing closer to $1.50/lbs. or higher. Which by my calculations is unbelievable.
The past few years have been pretty dry in cattle country and a lot of people sold out. Now they are clamoring for them...
I read an article that said US cow populations were at a 50 year low. There are fewer cows now than there were in the 1960's and a lot more people.

Yea the prices are ridiculous right now, diff not a buyers market. Hopefully it drops down some by the time I am ready to get my feet wet.

I think one of the best options right now is to buy young heifers and raise them to breeding age. You can buy small heifers cheaper than steers (400 to 600 pounds). Raise them to around 900 pounds breed them, and hang on for about 6 months after breeding, and sell as bred replacements. That is kind of what I am doing right now with some. Input costs averaged about 725 per head but bred replacements were bringing around 1400 at the sales here monday and tuesday. The market right now is in uncharted territory and with the populations being low, replacement cattle will be in high demand.

I like the idea, What breed are we talking about and where do I get them from?

I have 5 of these running with my longhorns right now. I plan on selling them as bred heifers this summer. Buyers don't know what they are bred to...
I can get these around that $725 mark all day... fresh off a farm.

All this talk about cows...
I'll bet tclay is whipping it like it stole something
On the other hand, have you thought about sheep? Lambs are really fetching good money right now.

What's normal? Decent pedigree, good color, nice confirmation, and avg. horn growth?
A 2 year old bull ready to breed cows, with papers should bring about $1000.
If he is out of top notch stock recognized in the industry as such... much more, like $3000 or higher.
But you can get a quality bull for a thousand dollars.

I think that owning longhorns would be badass, Hopefully I would get to do it one day

I buy from the stockyards close to here some said earlier in the thread about bacteria and disease but I vaccinate right out of the trailer and feed medicated feed for the first month. As long as you don't introduce them into the herd without a what I would call a quarantine period you will be fine. I tend to go with what buyers want which is black and not too much ear drop. A little brangus is good but too much and they will cut you at the sale. I am sure though that some breeders around where you live will sell off the farm just call them.
Tclayboy I used to hate longhorns but my son wants to get into breeding them. He has bought 4 now and the steps they have made in their breeding is impressive. Do you breed butler or a blend?

what if you have 60 acres available to fool with and know ZERO about cows?

do you have one million dollars?

Blend, I only have one straight butler cow.

It's from blending. The 7 original families (Butler, Peeler, Yates, Marks, Phillips, Wright, and WR or Wildlife Refuge) were basically the last 7 remaining herds when they decided to do an association and register them. People first kept the lines pure, and blend was kind of frowned upon. That led to inbreeding though.
They found the blending of the families led to it's own hybrid vigor. Now they have bulls weighing over a ton with 80" horn spreads.
One of which is a bull named Clear Win pictured below. I'm running one of his sons on my cows...

Drag Iron. Awesome bull. Same guy owns both Clear Win and Drag Iron.
Funny thing, he's not even in Texas. They live in Ohio.

Yeah the son I am refering to is on lease to a guy in the panhandle of florida. It looks almost identical except that it has a little more color.

Damn, I'd like to see him. Drag Iron has some of the finest color of any longhorn bull I've ever seen.
That's the cool thing about longhorns, you never know what you are going to get.
Clear Win is mostly white, but here is a picture of his son I have from when he was a yearling...
The market likes black... I like black.

No problem. I'm not the expert, but I know what I like.
