My grandmother used to use cattle pen panels and have them bent into an arch. She would train her tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, and squash up them and just walk under them to pick. Was a cool set up and easy on the back.

That’s exactly what I’m using for my cucumbers. I guess I’d just have to eat a pretty hefty up front cost if I needed to buy a lot of them. As long as I’d be able to get many years out of them. Im hoping when I finally do move that I’ll have room for a much bigger garden.

Do the Florida weave trellis. I do it for all my plants. Peppers, Tomatoes, Eggplants, and cucumbers. Much cheaper

That’s good info. I like that idea. I do find the cattle panel setup I have works wonderful for cucumbers and beans. But at almost $25 per panel, If I needed a bunch of them that could get pricey.

I’ve been wanting to read some books on gardening. Something where I can learn various growing tricks and methods like the one you mentioned. Anybody have any recommendations on reading material?

I know the struggle. My kids have been eating a lot of oranges lately and I’ve been throwing the peelings in my garden. So far, day 1, no cat mess.

The cold weather hasn’t hurt my garden too much, it seems. Although it looks like I lost one of my Poinsett 76 cucumber plants. I’ll wait to see if it recovers. I have plenty of backups, so if that’s all that is lost then that’s fantastic.

I have one cucumber that the outer leaves turned slightly brown. I'll give it a couple of days. Looks like the tomatoes can tolerate the cold much better than the cucumbers.

Pillage always has the finest setup. . . . until it floods.

(Just messing with ya, Pillage. I admire your garden and its results.)

I like the book "The Truth About Organic Gardening" for pesticide/herbicide info. It goes into the pros and cons of each style of gardening.

My main source for everything is the LSU AgCenter.

Google whatever topic you want to know and add "LSU AgCenter" to the end and you'll get the info that's available.

The vegetable planting guide LINK is a good source for planting times, and fertilization.

Are the prongs on both sides of the panel pushed into the ground the only thing holding the panel in place?

Scattered showers. Occasionally downpour. Other areas zero rain. Really just depends where you live.

A little rain and warm. My plants have taken off the last 3 days or so.

I’ve caught the itch the start a garden for the first time. The ole man and pow pow both work some pretty decent sized gardens. Curious if any of you guys try working fruits into the mix? Specifically watermelons and pumpkins. Both would get eaten up quick in my home so I’m thinking about tilling a couple separate rows off by themselves for these 2.

Good. My wife finally answered me. She says everything looks fine and that we’ve had a little bit of rain every day. So I’m anxious to see how everything is growing when I get back tomorrow. L
