I plant 3-4 new fruit trees every year. So far i have
4 apple trees (different kinds)
1 yellow plum
2 purple plum
1 pear
3 fig
1 mullberry
2 mayhaw
2 crab apple
1 japanese persimmon

was wanting something different this year (really dont wana mess with peaches and all the bug problems) Really wanted to try cherry but i know they are hard to grow down here. but read there are some low chill cherry trees now. Anyone ever grew any with success in our area (i live south mississippi)

i have native wild cherry trees all over my property; they are good for cherry bounce but thats about it. i think real cherries need a certain number of chill hours to fruit well, south MS probably doesnt get enough

you are right. Most cherries need lots of chill time... but i had read of a couple that are grafted for our area that needs only 200 hrs or less chill time. But was wondering if anyone has had experience

I thought about planting some but I heard it takes like 5-7 years to even get a crop out of them

Yep, cherry trees take awhile to start fruiting regularly. I am on year 4. Last year I got one cherry and it disappeared before it ripened.

You have to watch fertilization with them pretty regularly too. Too much and the tree will grow like crazy and not fruit at all.
