We were given a few packs of frozen fish filets (specs and reds) in quart bags. The bags are packed full and too much for us to eat at one time. Are we able to defrost the fish, then re-package into smaller packs before re-freezing? I've heard this is a no-no and I've heard that it will be perfectly fine. Thanks in advance.

Don't refreeze. I'll take whatever you don't cook after the 1st defrost.

I defrost the same filets all the time. Never had any problems

You will be fine (you won't get sick) if you defrost them quickly under running cold water and once the filets break free the frozen block, immediately put what you aren't eating in smaller batches/ziplocks so they re-freeze quickly.

Tell whoever gave the fish to you to check this article out. Freeze fish

Just run some water over one side of the frozen fish until they become soft enough to take out. the bottom portion will still be frozen put it back in the freezer

I’ve tried that method of glazing/freezing individual filets, but it took a whole lot longer than the article suggests. And if you caught a decent haul of fish, you’re talking about an all day affair to freeze them that way.

Wiped down the ole band saw blade and table, cut the block into usable pieces. Still frozen, problem solved.

You are welcome..

No doubt it takes long. I would not recommend that method to someone with a limit of fish. Was just sharing the info with original poster.

I vacuum seal mine with 6-8 trout filets in each. I stopped doing the water in a ziplock method years ago.

I didn’t find it to be all that bad. I did a 25 limit of specs in around an hour. The hold up is freezer space. If you have a standup or chest freezer with enough room for multiple baking sheets at a time you could probably do a three or four person limit in a couple hours.

After I froze them that way, I’m a believer. I was still pulling individual fillets out of that bag over a year later and they tasted almost as good as fresh.

Never thought about that but I guess a new hacksaw blade that was washed with soap would work too...

I made it last on purpose because it was easy to grab individual filets for myself and I don’t always have specs.

It was also in there with a couple dozen lbs each of AJ, tuna, grouper, tilefish, and the 35lbs of wahoo I brought home from a tournament. On top of that my dad’s freezer is full of random gallon bags of bass and bream, so those get thawed any time we actually have a bonefied fry.

So yeah. Eat fish much.

yes its no big deal, defrost repackage and refreeze.

the fish will lose a little of their firmness having been double frozen but its of no concern.

just run tap water over the fish to quickly defrost so hopefully you can refeeeze before they completely defrost 100%
