We have always mixed both fertilizer and seed in the same hopper and then broadcast them at the same time when planting. Recently I have read where people recommend spreading fertilizer first and then the seed. However no one seems to give much reason behind it. Curious of the OB's opinion on mixing fertilizer and seed in the same hopper/spreader?

We plant the seed. Once it starts coming up we spread the fertilizer. Just make sure to fertilize right before a rain. The Nitrogen will evaporate if left o dry ground too long.

We don’t mix it because we like to know just how much seed we are throwing out in each plot. We also spread fertilizer separate because we never use our own equipment to spread the fertilizer. We use the wagon from the CO-OP

We have always spread the fertilizer 1st then work it into the soil just a bit then spread the seed and drag a harrow to lightly cover it. After that pray the forecast for rain was accurate and maybe top it off with some high N stuff after it starts to come up.

I think the problem is if you mix the two and let them sit for an extended period of time the fertilizer can burn the seed, if you are mixing it on site and throwing it out pretty quick I can see no reason why not to

We seed first. Then fertilize once we have a decent stand. Usually sometimes around the first frost.

For wheat or oats or ryegrass, we usually put out #100 of DAP plus #200 of Am Nitrate (34%) per acre. No reason to put out Potash if you just want to make grass as opposed to trying to make seed heads.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Usually we end up planting right before rain so it doesn't sit long. I say usually, but the last two years were rough on rain in Sept/Oct. Waiting to fertilize after it comes up seems like a good idea.

Some recommend fertilizing about a week or two before planting to get it broke down into the soil. I always just threw the seed then fertilizer and ran over it with the harrow (after plowing/tilling of course). Right before a rain if you can. I never had a problem doing it as I did.

We spread both separately, but usually seed and fertilize on same day and work it all in together. Never had a problem.

Experts say to put your phosphorus out when you seed. 2-3 weeks after that come back with your ammonium nitrate or urea

We speread separately to ensure proper distribution. The lighter seeds will fall to the bottom of the hopper giving you a lesser seed rate towards the end of the run.
