Flying - Checking In Pistol

Going to Colorado in a month and I want to bring by side arm. Is it as simple as the following? Firearms must be unloaded and transported in a locked, hard-sided container in checked baggage. Ammunition must also be properly packaged and declared. Firearms are not permitted in carry-on bags.
You must declare the firearm to the airline at the ticket counter.

It's that simple, yes. Just pay attention to local Co laws, including magazine capacities. Even some local municipalities get more strict than the state level.

Co laws
This. There has been some recent anti gun legislation in CO so I’d tread carefully

Yes. They have you fill out an info slip that gets taped onto the hard case. And the luggage is escorted to the plane by someone. It's not put on the luggage carousel.

Yes, but there are some caveats.
I’ve flown numerous times with a firearm and MSY will set you up for failure because some other airports can be more strict.
I’ve learned that you need a lock in each lock hole on your box. Even if it’s a small box, if there are multiple locking points you need multiple locks.
If your box is compromised in anyway, get a new one. A friend of mine learned that when we flew.
Just buy a box of ammo and use that box for the ammo you’re transporting. MSY has let me leave with the ammo in magazines but then I fly home and that airport says no. So now I have a box for my pistol ammo and another box for rifle ammo that I down my magazine into.
You also can’t use the automated bag check systems. Other than that you’re GTG.

So can the empty clip, box of bullets and pistol be in the same hard shell box with all lock holes locked?

Flying with a gun is pretty clean, just be prepared and follow the rules.

Not sure if rules are different than with shotguns, but I fly with shotguns all the time. Unloaded shotgun, less than 11 lbs of ammo in original package (they don’t check this), and whatever else I can fit in my gun case and still be under 50 lbs, locked w 3 locks. Tell the front counter it’s a gun. They look in the case, make you sign a piece of paper, make you lock it up. They take the case and it shows up at your destination airport. It’s simple.

Yes, that’s how I fly. Pistol, magazines, bullets in the same box and all locked.
