Traveling to Ruidoso after Christmas with some teenagers. We will ski a little, tube a litte, explore the outdoors a lot. Any tips on fishing the area that time of year? Location? Species to target? Bait to use?

As always, thank you

Alto Lake and Grindstone Reservoir the closest 2 stocked lakes that are open. Bonito Lake is still closed I think until next spring due to forest fires from couple years ago.

The river through town can be good. I am not sure of stocking dates, but as a kid some years ago, we caught a lot of 8-10" rainbows just walking down the river with our Zebco's. Fun on light action gear.

There is a lake at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Casino on the Mescalero Reservation. I have never fished there, though.

Salmon Eggs or Berkeley Power Baits are consistent. We also did well on small Mepps in-line spinners and small spoons.

You can get weekly fishing reports from the NM Dept of Wildlife and Fisheries. I like to keep up on NM fishing and hunting even though I usually only get out that way once a year.

You realize it’s going to very cold and snowy right OP? Possibly frozen over? I lived for 6 years as a kid in Alamagordo so we fished the lake at the Casino once or twice a year. I remember we always fished the damn with salmon eggs but I have no idea how it is in winter.

Yes sir. Cold is not an issue. Been to the area a few times in the Winter. Just never paid any attention to fishing opportunities.

Appreciate the feedback.
