Hey guys, I’ll be taking my 87 year old grandpa out this Wednesday for what might be our last fishing trip together. I primarily target redfish by sight fishing and haven’t went after specs in a while. He enjoys live bait under popping corks or tight line and I usually am a casting plastics and and trolling banks. I really don’t care if it’s reds or specs all that much but I would like to get him on some fish the way he likes to fish. Between work and kids ball I haven’t been out in a while. I usually would take him out to the rigolets but I’m thinking it’s to dirty with the spillway situation. If anyone is willing to point me in the right direction I would appreciate it a ton. I can launch at chef pass, rigolets or pearlington. I can’t get to far from slidell Incase he has to come back in for any reason. I know how alot of us are about spots so please email me if you would rather not post.

Thanks guys

I know it's a bit outside the range you wanted but a limit of reds is pretty easy to pick up on live bait in Hopedale right now. Just pick a windblown bank and go to town. Maybe someone else can get you on a spot a little closer, and hope your granddad gets to tear them up.

Thanks man. I can get down the MRGO pretty easy from chef pass. As long as it’s not to far off the canal that might be an option.

Yea I’m kinda limited to spots because if he starts feeling bad etc. I’ll have to be able to get back in fairly quick. We looking to make a good memory trip!! Looks like high tide is between 2-3 in the area I’m trying to stay in. I normally fish falling tide so I’m open to any suggestions for sure.

Call Angie at Island Marina in Lake Catherine. I've seen quite a few trailers, so they must be catching something in the Lake Borgne area. Good Luck. Hopefully the old guy can teach you a thing or 2.

I did this about 14 years ago with my grandfather and my father. It was his last trip ever and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Go enjoy the day and make memories fish or no fish.

If you are really worried about catching I might consider a guide just for this occasion. It would allow you more time to be with your grandfather and fish catching should be better odds. However it makes a lot of sense to take him on your own as well go with your heart no matter what you will have a great trip.

I would launch at Island Marina and try the broken marsh and grass beds in Lake Catherine for reds and maybe run over to Lakeshore Estates and try for some trout. I’ve had luck since the spillway opened in these two spots as well as the ponds off the Intracoastal Waterway. If it’s calm, you could run across Lake Borgne to Proctor point, the last Modi’s Today I saw showed clean water over there. Should be able to find bass no matter what.

Thanks Ron! That’s the kind of advice I’ve been looking for. Do you know if Island has live shrimp? I’ve never launched there before

I just saw a report on Facebook where 4 guys limited out on trout in the lake. They didn’t say where but I’m thinking the hospital wall may have trout.

The do sell live shrimp but sometimes they run out or don’t have them. If that’s the case, there are two other launches nearby that have them. I’m not sure how the spillway opening has affected the bait availability as they usually catch them in the intracoastal, MRGO, or in the Biloxi marsh.

Thanks for all the help guys, we launched out of the Rigolets and they had live shrimp. I decided not to do Lake Catherine because I have never been in there and my dad told me it can get pretty shallow unless you know the channels which I don't. I didn't wanna risk anything going wrong with my 87 year old grandfather in the boat. So we hit the tressels, some spots around unknown pass and another spot around goose pond without any luck. We were kinda limited on how and where to fish cuz he couldn't exactly sling a cork out or work any baits. Our only choice was to anchor and tight line shrimp or put them under a cork. While my grandpa gave me a hard time about not finding any fish we had a great time. Now hopefully the next time I go out I can get on some trout cuz my oldest daughter is begging to catch some!
