Wow! Anyone trying to sell you a light vs a good thermal is trying to sell you a light

You can get it done with a light and I have for many years but if you can afford a good thermal get one.

Want one so bad, but I'd never use it and 2 grand buys a nice new rifle.

What's considered a "good" thermal?

The one he got is $5k

That’s around the sweet spot for most of your upper mid range thermals.

5k is too much though. Its nice but for 2-2.5k u could get a great thermal for hog hunting. I would spend 2k(ish) on rifle thermal & 2k on a handheld that would be a better combo than 5k on a rifle thermal. IMHO

Misread your post.

I agree having a handheld thermal is awesome but I personally believe that the difference in range detection and picture quality between a 2-2.5k scope and a 5k scope are justification to getting the nice one and using that to scan with.

With the nice quick release mounts like Bobro etc. you can snap to levers and have it on and off and it 100% holds zero so in theory you could use your rifle scope as your handheld as well.

Used to think that way but now I have so many rifles that I started buying nice accessories

What’s a good handheld? After last night I can see where one would come in handy for scanning riding in a sxs.

The scope is fine if you’re sitting in a blind or just riding around and up to a field and scanning occasionly.

Which one did you get?

I'm eyeing the Pulsars.

The Zeiss ones are $2999 and great. Go to Bowie and look at them. I'm not there anymore btw. I recommended them to one of our guys who hunts in Africa. He bought one on my word and didn't even really test it before the trip. His outfitter bought 10 right after he left. That's how impressed they were.

Pulsar is phenomenal. I tell people just stay away from ATN and you will be fine.

Nice. That's what I'm looking at. I also like the Trail 2.

Trail gets the nod from me for the laser rangefinder. All bets are off with any sort of depth perception at night and having the rangefinder is incredible.

That's why I'm looking at it, but some online reviews say that the rangefinder is lacking. It looks like it might be better for scanning, also. Any other pros or cons for the Trail?

I’ve never had a problem with the rangefinder and sea pickle has a trail 2 and loves it. I don’t have any time behind a thermion but know they’re very nice.

A pulsar hand held like this should work well. LINK

Hogs are by nature very hot animals & they will stick out like a sore thumb in the woods or in a field. I personally find it a pain to scan w/ a rifle, even if you have a quick detach that will go back to zero. As you are stalking up to the hog its just easier to use a hand held in my experience. All my rifle thermals are under 3k and have been more than enough to have a great time hog hunting. I agree to go with pulsar over atn, although I admit all i have every used are pulsar thermals.

Been hammering them this week so far. I think me and my buddy are up to 13. It’s hard as shite shooting at these frickers a few beers in once you hit the first one.
