Hey cap, what does an inshore charter cost these days? $500-600 plus tip?

I at least have the decency to wear a fake mustache when I pull something like that.

I was on a charter in Lake P back in April 2011 jigging the causeway with a well known captain and this happened to us. Guys that had been fishing with him yesterday trying to imitate the pattern he taught them. Captain came within shouting distance when he saw they weren't doing something right and tried to offer advice - pretty classy.

The turn off about this captain is that we seemed to be there for his fishing trip and not for a guided trip. I told him ahead of time we'd have my GF who was a novice and I wanted to him to focus on helping her - to which he agreed. He sat up at the front of the boat trolling and would have first cast at every piling, and caught probably 80% of the fish. I asked him 3x what we weren't doing right and if he could help my GF, he told me that he had to man the trolling motor, just cast to the pilings and let the bait hit the bottom.

Group of 4 going this weekend. $750 plus tip so around $225/pc.

When I first bought my boat I called a guide that had helped me out in the past and told him exactly what I wanted. Help learning a new area and different areas I could focus on. I hired him to fish out of my boat and to show me the areas. He also placed several coordinates in my GPS. Now was I at those spots the very next day eventho we caught, no.... But I do try the areas when Im around if the conditions are right. Im not gonna pay a guide that much money and not fish the areas.... he doesnt own the damn lake. Me and the guide became friends afterwards and speak often. I have sent several of my friends to him. I still dont ask him for areas because its not right. If you wana know, either find them yourself or pay the guy for the trip. Simple as that

I think the most shocking thing about this thread is ST was fishing.

pretty much anywhere....

that doesnt include lodging, food or drinks. Thats just per person with a capt and your fish cleaned.

Way too many charters out there who believe they own the damn water because they have paying customers.

Try Sweetwater, Delacroix, Capt. Jack Payne.
4 man trip, one night lodging runs about $800.
And Jack has helped MANY a person become familiar with the area. Check out his reports.
A friend went out with him years ago, then bought a boat. He was talking to Jack after setting the boat up with electronics and Jack actually went out with him and got him started on some nice spots. We make it a point to go with Jack even though my bud has a boat down there. He is fun to fish with.
Try that with some otherwise great guides who will barely tell you what they caught and where. They will tell you in answer to the question where did you catch em? "In da Mouf!".

However if I were hiring a guide to learn an area I'd be more interested in navigational knowledge, hazards and local land marks not shown on maps. I'd also tell the guide in advance and ask for him to show me popular community holes to get me started in the right direction. And never would I mark a waypoint at someone else's honeyhole, whether it's a professional guide or co-angler, without his knowledge and consent.

This is the correct approach.
