Farmers of the OB: Deer and peanuts
So I know deer like peanuts themselves and it was my understanding that the plant itself is very nutritious and deer like them? Is this the case or have I heard wrong?

The farmer next to us has peanuts in the rotation this year and there is a ton of tracks around the field but no noticeable signs of them actually eating the plant itself.

On a side note they have been killing the clover that is in the plots still from fall. Going to make sure to seed heavy with clover from here on out.

What did they plant last year?

The farmer by our camp plant corn for 2 years then Soybeans.

So for the 2 years they plant corn, we use soybeans in the feeder then corn.

Spinner or trough?

If spin type do you roast the soybeans? Every time we have used raw soybeans they mold or jam up the spinner.

Yes, I've seen them walk a mile of turnrow or water furrow, to get to a peanut field.

A peanut is a tender, high protein, summer legume. Deer love it as browse. The reason you don't see evidence that they're eating it is because it's growing so fast right now. And it's relatively browse tolerant.

QDMA Article on Peanuts

Peanut plants are great deer forage. As one poster mentioned, hogs are going to tear them up once the peanuts start forming. Similar issue with chufa.

re: Farmers of the OB: Deer and peanuts
I’ve planted them before but...you have to actually treat it like you’re a farmer if you want them to make a stand. You will have to spray the weeds at the time they crack the ground and at least 1X there after to control the weeds. You need to get the soil smooth as silk and it takes a lot of bags to plant 1 acre. Feed & seed stores don’t normally carry it because it’s predominantly sold to farmers at buying points. If you know of a farmer and can use their contacts to get the seed it will make an awesome plot. Where beans get hammered and will get killed by overbrowsing peanuts will keep on growing. I do recommend if this is something you’re going to be serious about doing is put up a 2 strand electric fence around the plot. When I planted them that was the first thing I did after the seed went into the ground. If hogs are on your property they will go right down the rows and eat the seed before it even germinates.

Well it's about 200 acres planted by a farmer. I am just benefiting from it.

I’ve killed deer in peanut country before and they had a nice layer of fat on them.
