Ethanol "free" gas in outboards

I know you are suppose to use as much ethanol free gas as possible but I am not a boat mechanic, what exactly does it do to the engine if you use it rarely vs constantly? Just curious as the boat is getting serviced now so I am debating filling her up at a gas station rather than the marina

add stabil, you will get water in your gas tank

better use a boat regularly if you use ethanol based. turns into pea green soup after a few months of sitting up. clogs up the jets in the carb., makes it run like shite.
i swear i'll never use it again.

It's gets worse mileage and it wreaks havoc on rubber hoses and lines. Water in the fuel is another possible problem. It also attacks the resin in fiberglass fuel tanks.
ETA we left ethanol fuel in the motor over the winter 2 years ago (actually for like 4 months) and it wouldn't run worth a shite, we had to take apart the carb and clean it out an replace all the small fuel lines on the motor.

Ok frick that I'll just pay more at the marina

You'll end up paying less or about the same. Ethanol has far less energy in it than normal gas, so the mileage sucks.

if you look in the fuel bowls after mos of fuel sitting in them it looks like jelly. key is to pull the fuel line off the engine every time you get to the ramp and let it run out of gas and most engines have a drain screw in the bottom of the bowls drain them.

There are stations that sell ethanol free gas

Ditto to what's already been passed along in this thread. Add Sta-bil Ethanol treatment.

Does this all apply to new outboard motors? I have a 2011 4stroke and am under the impression that I shouldn't have to worry about it.

Hmmm, i am curious as well ours is a 2011 Yamaha 150 4 stroke

It applies to new motors too. The ethanol gas has a short shelf life so the motor being new does not change this

quote:Right. I find new motors don't run bad on it like old ones, but don't let it sit up in your engine. Use Sta-bil and if you know you won't use your boat for a while disconnect the fuel line and let the motor run til it kills at the launch. You don't want that shite sitting in you lines for extended periods of time.

PS, ethanol based ate out all of the gaskets in my carb. of my 4 wheeler, had to replace every single one. Even the pitchcock since it had a rubber liner.

I usually burn a bunch of fuel and don't let any set up. Just want to make sure that running it through my motor won't hurt it
Posted on 8/7/11 at 9:36 pm to FelicianaTigerfan
If you run it alot you should be fine. If the fuel doesn't sit, the only problems you should see would be from the alcohol eating hoses and gaskets. The best thing you can do is run it often. Sitting up was bad for motors long before they started putting ethanol in the fuel. It's much worse for them now.
I could go to war behind the ethanol bullshite. It takes more BTU's to produce 1 gallon of grain ethanol than that gallon of ethanol could ever return. Stupid stupid stupid

find one good reason to use in your boat?
no?
theres a reason for it. It sucks. Bad for carbs, bad for hoses, bad for boats.
get a water / fuel seperator, use 100% gas.

If you dont have ethanol safe fuel lines it will deteriorate your lines rather quickly if you dont use your boat often.
ETA: n/m i see it was already mentioned.

And the corn lobby bullied/conned/paid EPA to approve the sales of E-15. That combined with the unrealistic (and climbing) "renewable" fuels mandate, also brought to us by the corn squeezers, might leave us with the only fuel being widely available not approved for marine applications. Period.
Any of your small engines should be burning Stabil treated fuel, as this crap will frick up mowers, weedeaters, blowers, 4-wheelers, jetskis, etc. And as noted, it definitely reduces gas mileage in everything. Frick EPA

Redneck don't you live in houma? If so the jubilee on 311 and lafayette is ethanol free.
