I have done a lot if research on this zoysia and others, and decided to purchase plugs and let them take over my existing lawn. Since I have done research and have somewhat of an idea of what I am doing. I was wondering if anyone has done this and what has and has not worked for them in SELA. Most of the research I have found was in sandy or red clay soil neither if which I have.

They will be very difficult to grow in shade. Don't let them lie to you.

After Katrina I replaced my St. Augustine with Empire Zoysia. With SA still next door and being an aggressive grass it crawled back to my lawn. Using plugs will take a long time depending on the size of the lawn you have.
I like the EZ grass though. It is slower growing than other grasses and looks nicer.

If you miss a week of mowing in July/aug. good luck. Super thick.

Do you think the Zyosia would overtake a centipede yard in SE LA? I have thought about seeding or sprigging Zyosia due to the neighbors bringing in torpedo grass. I have time so if it would take awhile it isn't a huge deal.

Yeah, it is thick. Almost like carpet and feels good on bare feet. Lol.......

I wouldn’t use empire it’s my least favorite wide blade zoysia. Palisades, el toro, and ultimate-flora are better options in that order.

I've got Empire in my yard and love it.

It does get thick for sure.

Do you think the empire will overtake my centipede? I had read it would then I read some articles where the centipede overtook it. I really want to convert completely over to the empire I know this will take time if it works.

I'm trying to convert my Hodge podge of grass to zoysia. Just put a pallet out and am gonna cut the centipede that is near it at the ground with my reel mower and see if that weakens it.

I would bet the Emp zoy would overtake the Centipede, as it has in my yard.

That being said, whichever is healthier is going to overtake the other, so do the research on the one you like the best, and cater to it.

I'm pretty sure there are care instructions for the Emp zoy at sodsolutions dot com.

Thanks I would like the zoysia to stay the reason I planted was because I had a fungus in my centipede. So I figured I would treat the fungus and plant zoysia in the thinned out area. I think I will add lime to pick up the ph as centipede does not like soil closer to neutral.

I'm looking at putting some palisade zoysia in the bare spots of my centipede. I found a sod farm here that sells it and the guy that runs it highly recommends it.
